Broke my cat 941 loader

OK my story starts like this. This summer i had to tare down my track loader for the torque converter seal. The seal was leaking pretty good. I noticed while i was taking the flexible drive coupling off to get at the seal, that they were starting to get dry rotted. I think my biggest mistake was i replaced the Joints with after market ones and not factory cat parts. well it ended up costing me.lol I was using the loader tonight before i had it hauled over to my girlfriends house. the old loader was just purring along pushing brush tress etc, when all of a sudden i hear a knocking noise. I am thinking great the engine is knocking etc. It was getting dark on me and i just happened to look down by my feet and saw sparks flying. also it got to the point that the loader did not want to pull its self. So i go get my truck and pull it back to the drive way. I pull the side panels off and found out all for joints P/N 5S7893 are torn in two. No wonder it quit pulling. I guess that's what i get for buying cheep after market crap. luckily it didn't tare anything up i just have to drop the belly pan and replace the joints. I should of just sent them back and got the factory cat one,s. I didn't like the way the after market ones were built, the bolts holes were not as deep as the factory ones i took off and the rubber seemed a lot softer to me. Now i might of caused the problem my self. I had to run a tap in all the bolt holes to get the rubber out of them and make them deeper so the bolts that worked on the factory mounts would bolt all the way down with the new mounts. So the new ones didnt last 20 hours, but the factory ones lasted over 8 years. So what do you guys think? any body else run into a problem like this? thanks Bobby Miller

a question for the wrenches.

How do you guys handle the cost of supplies and consumables? I've worked in shops that charged a flat 5% of the labor to cover them and places that just ate the cost. I was kind of curious how the independents and even you company guys chime in on this. Let's face it gone are the days of anything being cheap.

General excavator pump question

Just trying to get my head around something ...correct me if i am wrong on any of this. Modern excavators use engine speed sensor, pressure sensors,angle sensors etc to vary a pressure signal to the pump controller making it adjust the swash plate angle correct? On older machines with no electronic control like that how was the pump swash controlled? Dont have a problem with a particular machine just trying to educate myself a little better!

Hi, I just bought a Cat D4D dozer to assist my excavator with opening up a few areas around the place for more grazing. The excavator can take out any tree that I want it to do, pretty sandy soil and I have been pushing up the stacks with big heavy root balls with its dozer blade but was not real happy as I felt that it was really designed mainly to backfill trenches, hence the D4D to share the work load.

I was hoping that you people here may be able to give me links to specs and manuals for this machine. All the googling I've done have not really produced much results, they seem a bit dodgy and hard to know if they are going to give the right stuff. I don't mind paying to download manuals, I did with the Komatsu excavator and what I got has been real handy and a great reference.

Took out drain plug, about 13 gals came out slow (with water and what look liked mud). Thought it was all out so I put 2 gals of gas in to rinse it out, plug was still out, nothing came out. Put in about 1 1/2 gals of diesel, fill tube was full. Still nothing out drain plug. Stuck wire 2 1/2' feet in with no results. Put rubber plug in and used air hose to try and break loose clog. All it dose is build up pressure, and no effect on the fuel in the fuel neck / top of tank. Any on one have any ideas on what the problem could be? And how to fix it.

Case 580b backhoe won't go forward or reverse...

I just purchased a 1971 Case 580B backhoe/loader from an old farmer who said that it won't move forward or reverse until it's warmed up. I got the thing home and ran it for a good 30-45 min and it seemed like it wanted to move in 2nd gear but just wouldn't go. The shuttle lever on the column almost seems like it just drifts between F and R if that makes any sense. I really had to push it to get it far enough up or down in order to somewhat lock it into place. The tranny temp was just in the green and as soon as I put it in gear, the temp gauge would just dump back to almost nothing. The previous owner seemed to think it is a problem with the pickup tube/screen...? Should I let the thing run even longer and then check? I've also heard about a filter in front of the radiator housing that might be bad... I literally rolled it off the trailer and then messed with the bucket/backhoe for 30 min. I haven't been able to dive into the tractor at all. I am just scared that something big is wrong, like the clutch or tranny itself is bad... Please help.. Phil, where you at? I know these are your specialty...
