Hey Gang,
10 year old Case 85XT my personal machine since new, just cracked 1000 hrs, this past winter was cold, and during a project a friend I hired to do some winter landscaping to get a restaurant open was using my machine to avoid draggin his 4 hours, although I told him to not fill my machines up out of his bed tank, he did so anyway, a week later my machine shut down, and I had to replace both the canister and in line fuel filters, prime and it was back in action, it was starting to put out a little more smoke then normal, but it was 8 degrees, and we still had to burn off half a tank of his fuel (turns out he had no filter on the truck tank, and had gotten the diesel off another site) so we didn't think much of it, brought it home and 3 tanks of fuel later it is still blowing a lot of smoke at idle, not near as bad at WOT, almost looks normal. I mentioned this to my dealer and he asked if I had done the valve lash yet, I said no and we figured it might be that since the machine seems to have mormal power, maybe a 10% loss.
Now when it came back to the shop I changed the engine oil and filter and did not notice anything out of the ordinary, the machine got used maybe 10 hours then sat for a month, next time out I checked the oil it was about 1/4 quart above full and I figured it was just I had added a touch to much, it then sat another month then got taken out and after about 20 hours I checked it again this time was about a quart over, which still didn't bother me because it was leaning pretty good to that side, now about another 15-20 hours and it is now 2-1/2 quarts over and smells of fuel, so I do have a problem, question is what? Bad injector, head gasket, cracked head??
As I said I have noticed maybe a 10% loss of power, nothing major, I am not blowing coolant and it seems at normal levels, it almost seems like it is getting to much fuel, I think I am using more fuel then normal, unfortunately my fuel gauge shows full and doesn't move till its down to 1/4 tank??? So any suggestions or past experiences would be helpful, this machine has been a rock solid piece since I got it, my Cat dealer tries every year to get me to trade it by bringing out a demo, and every year I say yeah that's faster and smoother, but this thing doesn't break, and you can get to everything on it easily, and I can literally pick cars up with it, so I am sure hoping for good news, especially after replacing my 450's 6.0L to the tune of 12k.
PS. Same friend put the same fuel in his 60xt a month later and his machine was smokey, he changed his filters and everything went back to normal for him (of course, he is way harder on his stuff and he now has a filter on the bed tank) not sure if that is related but it seems so.
Thanks all!!
