Komatsu D40 A drive clutch issues

jeudi 5 mars 2015

Hi everyone. Its my first post on this forum but I've learnt a lot here by browsing some of the 'gold' information the grey beards on this forum have taken the time to write down, so thanks in advance.

Up till recently I have been using two old Inter TD 9B powershifts to break in old forestry land on my farm here in NZ. But wear, time, and hardening oil seals have all taken their toll on them and they have gone to a new home with a young diesel mechanic who just loves swing spanners in his spare time:)

I'm now the proud owner of a very tidy Komatsu D40 A, year 1980. 5000 hrs. It appears to be the last of the manual gear shifts. I have the original operators manual, and have adjusted the drive clutch free play and the clutch output shaft inertia brake as per specs, (or so I think I have!!) but it is often a bit of a baaarstard to change gears, I often have to grab an armful of steering clutches to take the 'pressure' out of the drive line, and then it changes gears slickly.

Also, when the dozer is first started up and driven the foot clutch is nice and easy to push down at idle, but after operating for an hour at the same revs the clutch is very hard to depress. Up the revs a touch and its fine though.

So I guess I'm looking for advice from someone who knows the innards of these dozers far better than my cursory inspection, what could possible be playing up here? The rest of the dozer is pristine, no play in all of the greasable joints, so someone looked after it well. Its got new SALT chains on, but old sprockets, so after getting the clutch sorted, they will be the next project.

I'm open to advice thanks!!
