L120E steering shudder problem

Hi

i have a Volvo L120E and quite often when trying to turn the steering jerks heaps,
you start turning then it will stop start stop start etc.. it does it in both directions.

does anyone have any ideas or know what i should be looking into to solve this.
it makes operating it quite difficult.
