Gehl skidsteer pops breaker & dies

samedi 17 décembre 2016

Finally a post after plenty of lurking - just couldn't dig up any clues on this one. I appreciate you joining our headscratching. My neighbour's 2009 Gehl 4640 has an electrical issue and we don't quite know where to go next. Good condition, low hours, intermittent farm use, otherwise running good.

It starts up and idles normally, but soon pops the #1 breaker and dies. On a cold start it will run several minutes before dying, but on subsequent starts it will only run 30 - 60 seconds before popping. However, if you start it up and then lift the restraint bar, it does not die but instead idles away happily. If I watch voltage at the #1 breaker, it looks normal (around 13.4V running) when the restraint bar is up, but when we lower the restraint bar it instantly drops to 12 - 12.5V. With the restraint bar down, you can see the battery warning light glowing very dimly before it pops the breaker. We have watched the interlock control module LEDs but don't see anything strange going on.

So we suspect that some component is shorting, but we're confused by the delay before it pops and not sure what to test next. We do have the shop manual & electrical schematics and I can post them if that helps.

Any thoughts are much appreciated!
