Backhoe health priorities

I am thinking about buying a backhoe to use around my place. Actually, I am trying to talk the little woman into allowing me to buy one.
Question I have is, how would you prioritize the health of the different parts of a backhoe? I don't mean by specific brand, but just in general.
I am anything but a professional mechanic, but I think that I could handle most minor issues, as long as it wasn't the transmission or the bottom end of the engine.
