So I bought a John Deere 310J 4x4 Powershift backhoe on auction a year or so ago with 1700 hrs on it. The other day the 2nd gear just stopped working (the gear I usually use). Then as I started testing everything else out, I noticed the 4th gear wasn't working either. So I sent it to a shop. They ruled out solenoids or electrical issues.
