Trouble blinding pipe

vendredi 18 juillet 2014

Having issues backfilling drain tile here.

Under ideal conditions, there is plenty of fine material to cover the pipe(blind) before filling the trench.

But out here in clay country, all that is available is the giant wads of hard clay that came out of the trench. No topsoil to speak of, and fines are hard to find.

I'm losing sleep over the thought of crushing the pipe. Not so bad if you see it happen, but if you aren't really careful, you bury it and don't even know there is a problem.

I was thinking of a screening bucket of some kind, but cost is steep on those.

How bout a skeleton bucket to separate the big chunks from the finer stuff? We are talking clay ranging from damp fresh out of the ground, to gooey sticky crap that's good for nothing.

Last resort would be buying gravel, which would also be the ideal solution. Biggest issue there is the distance from the road to the job.
