Crane repair

mardi 31 octobre 2017

I live in Washington state and need to know if there are state or fed. regulations on crane mechanics. Do crane mechanics need to have any certifications? I was recently told that it's not necessary but find that a little hard to believe. I've always stayed away from cranes just for liability reasons but now have the opportunity to work on a few. Any thoughts?

I just acquired the factory service manual for the 930 940 and 960 in pdf format. The scans aren't the greatest quality, but they are readable. If anyone needs a page or two to help them in their repairs, I'd be happy to share. Just need a valid email address. J. Stewart

Why no roll up doors

Why doesn't anyone other that Tak and Kubota offer a roll up door. It is so handy to roll the door up if you are getting in and out often and the ability to get out of the machine while the arms are up.

D6T joystick problem

I have a 2011 D6T dozer that dosent lower the blade like it should. In the past the blade had three positions; when you pushed it ahead a little it would lower slowly then if you push it ahead even further it would drop really fast, and clear ahead it would go to float. Now when ever I run it and push it ahead 3/4 of the way it drops really slow, and when ever I push it all the way ahead it causes the cylinders to chatter loudly and still lowers slow. I wonder if there is valve some where...

Got a 3-71 in a wheel loader. Got some water in though the exhaust, found a piston with some rust. Soak and soaked it got it to move bumping the starter. Piston went down and failed to come up. Ford 4500 autodig bucket only?

Hi folks, I have a 755 backhoe, a 19-551. I bent the bucket/curl control rod the other day. I pulled the cowl and straightened the rod, but I fear it will happen again. It feels as if there is a dentent on the bucket valve, both to open and close. Is this true? I was joking about the autodig, but it looks like some of them have some sort of simple automation? These feels like there is something wrong with the valve though, as when under heavy load, like pulling the stick in, boom up , and...

Mobile Heavy Equipment Text Books

Hi, I'm looking for a good learning resource relating to modern mobile heavy equipment. Currently I am doing my ITA Lvl1 heavy equipment technician (BC, Canada) with that we are using the CDX "medium/heavy duty commercial vehicle systems" text books. They combine commercial transport and heavy equipment for the first 3 years, and since commercial transport has higher safety implications, they drastically weigh towards that trade and skimp on heavy equipment. Therefore the information is...

Testing angle sensors on Z80

So I've got an issue with a Genie Z80/60 (s/n starts with Z8015). I'm suspecting the primary boom angle sensor is shot as it reads 40 degrees on the LCD panel regardless of boom position. Just wondering how one would go about testing the sensor to make sure its not a wiring issue. The angle sensor appears to be located at the rear of the boom and is a small, sealed black box with an adjustment link attached to it.

Austin Western Model 55 steering issues

Sorta' new to the forum. I've got a Model 55 Austin Western that I'd like to get back up and running. The thing that I see that may be an issue is the steering box. It looks like it is a "non oem" part, but fairly close. Steering shaft turns but feels like either splines or gear teeth are knocked off. I haven't taken it apart yet and probably won't till after Thanksgiving. Just trying to get a feel for what's out there. Thanks

How do you deal with night shift?

Hey guys. Tonight is my first of a week's worth of night shifts, and as usual I'm finding it hard to adjust. Running a crane on an industrial site maintenance shutdown, so as per, it's more waiting than working.
Spent the day trying to sleep but failed miserably, it's now 9pm of a 7-7 shift (plus an hour's travel each way) and starting to hit the wall. Any tips you might have for lasting the night will be gratefully received.... It's not my first time doing nights, but I never get used to it.

Case 1840 leaks oil from flywheel housing

Hello everyone, I could really use advice how to proceed with oil dripping out from a 3/4" threaded hole in the bottom of flywheel housing. First thought was it is the main engine seal but then I realized it is the hydraulic oil because it is very clean compared to the diesel engine oil. If I got it right the oil from the tandem drive pump must be leaking around the splined shaft that slides into the splined coupler inside the flywheel housing. I searched the Case forum and so far I did not...

Dresser TD7G

I recently bought a mid 80s TD7G which from what I've read originally came with the old IH diesel, this one has been re powered with a 4bt Cummins. It runs good after going through it servicing it, adjusting brakes and rebuilding track tensioner has been good machine so far. There are two more things I'd like to fix and keep coming up with nothing online. The control valve linkages are excessively sloppy. I was told they sell or sold a pin and bushing kit to rebuild the linkage on the...

D6N can not swim

A year ago a neighbor buried his 200 class Komatsu excavator. I can't find the post now to add to it, but he had the counterweight sunk so deep it would not build oil pressure. They took a few days to freeze and dig it out and life went on. A month or two ago in a spot less than 100 yards of where the excavator was stuck he took his newer D6N that he bought a couple months earlier swimming. He had ditched a trail and then plugged it to try to dry it up enough downstream for him to do some...

Case 1150H left track delay shift to high

My 1150H left track has a long delay when engaging in high gear, but then drives fine (doesn't slip/chatter under load).

If you put the left track in low range it drives fine, but then if you push the left turn brake, it disengages, and then you have to move the lever back into neutral and then back into low range to get the left track to re-engage.

The oil level is fine, and I just changed the filter, but I just bought this unit, and previously it has sat in the seller's yard for...

Used Champion graders?

I might be in the market for an older used grader and Champion's seem to be the most common for a lower cost older machine. I've seen a few older D740's listed around $15K a D680 for $10,000 a D562 at $12K and a D600 for $12K. I'm wondering if it possible to buy a decent older grader in this price range and if certain models are more desirable or should be avoided. I don't need a big grader and it won't get a lot of hours but does need to be somewhat reliable with parts availability. I'm a...

844 lull issue

Not exactly sure how to describe it. But it seems on most 844 lulls that if you have the boom raised up and level the machine sometimes coming down something locks up and causes the machine to jerk. I think something in one of the pistons to level the machine gets locked up. That's best I can describe it. It seems to happen in alot of the ones I've used. So probably a lingering problem all around?

Driving fence posts with a mini?

I am looking to expand my operation into contract fencing. I am wondering if anyone has seen a mini drive fence posts. I do not own the machine yet but I am looking at a ~8000 lb machine. Either using a plate compactor with a flange welded to the bottom or a breaker. The plate compactor is the preferred solution due to the fact that it is half the money of a similar sized breaker.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this, in my mind I would think it would work. But I can't find anyone who...

943 Radiator temps

This weekend I replaced the pistons and cylinder head on my 943 with the 3204 , s/n 03Y01878. We ran it today for 3 hours and took a heat gun to check temps on the head and radiator. It does somewhat ok on an upgrade, it becomes harder to brake on level ground, but when traveling in reverse on a downgrade it takes all my might to disengage the tracks (thus no turning or braking) ability. The following photo is its Transmission Control Valve (TCV)

How did YOU became an operator?

G day All.
I'm currently days away from finishing school. My life long dream has always been to become a heavy equipment operator (particularly excavator) since i was a kid and now I've done some growing and am still just as passionate. I dont know if this is relatable but when i was younger i would regularly ride my bike to construction sites when they were working and just sit and watch the machinery work. I still to this day get enjoyment out of watching them work and constantly dream...

Case 580se shuttle/torque converter

I have a 1985 case 580se backhoe that is sluggish in fwd, rev works ok till fluid gets warm then almost no travel. I am planning on rebuilding the shuttle. the question I have is about the torque converter. I would rather not replace it if not necessary so is there any way to separately test the torque converter? I understand doing a stall test is the correct way to test the converter but if the shuttle is slipping wouldn't that give an inaccurate gauge on the condition of the converter?...

85 r686 is surging at lower rpm between 1000-1200 is the worst. smooths out ok above that but very annoying driving around the yard when almost any throttle will start a surging/bucking show. throttle linkage is tight and return spring on pump is intact. Mini-ex in "limp mode"? SYS light flashing

Hey guys, simple question.

2011 hitachi zx35u-3 mini-excavator (4tons). Was running fine, and then the throttle dial/switch became unresponsive. Machine would start right up with the key, but it would idle around half-throttle and turning the engine-speed-dial had no affect.

Took apart the right ignition switch area and found that the wires for the rotary throttle-control switch had chafed and probably shorted out. I found a test procedure which seemingly confirmed that the switch itself...

Hi all,
I have been searching for parts online for my father for an SEM ZL30F-1. It appears that spare parts for this model are not readily available, and I have no idea what other SEM models would have the same parts. There may even be Caterpillar models which have the same parts, but again, I have no idea. So, I would be extremely grateful if someone could send me in the right direction. Ford 4500 questions

Hi folks,

Got the 4500 running great with a new cylinder head and valves. 3 questions:
1) Can I flip the rear wheels from side to side so the backhoe is wider? It is really tippy side to side, and I am hoping the wider stance will help.
2) What is the small round foot pedal next to the control stand for the back hoe? Pushing it with the engine running makes the hoses jump, but has no impact on any of the backhoe functions if I press it while operating the backhoe.
3) The loader is bent, so...

Cat 248 Hydraulic Leak

I've got a 2000 Cat 248. Used it a bit last week and parked it, when I came back a couple days later found hydraulic oil running out from under it. The hydraulic tank was nearly empty by this point. I had a chance to lift the cab today and take a peek but it's very difficult to see much of anything with all the piping down there. There are two large diameter low pressure hoses coming off the bottom of the tank that disappear into the maze of pipes and hoses, I assume these supply the pump....

580 slow on a hill

Went to move my '86 case 580 SE up a slope/hill earlier this day. It felt like I had to rev it quite a bit higher than usual to get up there but was still a lot slower. Went in 1st gear. Outside temp is about 10c/40f. Could this be due to some oil not being warmed up? I used the machine for about 3min before moving it.
Thanks for your input!

are tracks fairly universal?

I'm looking for a new-to-me excavator, and see some that need tracks and chains, which I don't mind if the price is good, nothing ticks me off more than seeing new inferior parts on a machine. this way I can buy a good set and not worry.

Are chains for steel pads fairly universal? from the rubber tracked machines I read that basically the pitch and the number of links is needed. Can I put dozer chains on an excavator? I like the idea of lubed links

Hello, Thanks for checking out my thread. I'm hoping someone with more knowledge than me would be willing to help.

I recently stripped a few teeth off the ring gear. I'm in the automotive performance business so naturally I called in my gear guy to fix it.

Anybody know how I pull all those gears out of the case? Is there a video or written instructions somewhere?

Case 1840 leaks oil from flywheel housing

Hello everyone, I could really use advice how to proceed with oil dripping out from a 3/4" threaded hole in the bottom of flywheel housing. First thought was it is the main engine seal but then I realized it is the hydraulic oil because it is very clean compared to the diesel engine oil. Had a quick check on sis in regards to bleeding the implement pumps and it seems to only mention operating the machine which seems a little contradictory. Four test points off to the right are not letting oil through although I'm sure they are case drains. The big rig is definitely cavitating the pumps just from the noise when operating. Any tips?

Gradall vs tilt bucket

Looking for input here.

Visited a customer who hired a Gradall to clean a farm ditch. The operator ran this machine full time and the ditch was damned perfect. Consistent shape , grade , and clean of spillage. He was loading out the spoils into a single dump trailer so he had spare time in the cycle i suspect. From what I was told it was two buckets and move.

Anyone have experience with doing this work either with a gradall or tilt bucket care to weigh in? Which is best?

Hydraulic Lift Tables in Ontario

Hi all,

I'm working for a construction company in Ontario since 2005. I'm one among the senior architects of our company. As we signed a new contract recently, we are now in need of some good quality construction machinery.

I was looking for a company to purchase some hydraulic lift tables. In my search, I came across a company offering hydraulic lift tables in Ontario itself.

Do you know more about...

Cat 304 Pins and Bushing Purchase

So I had another thread about pins and bushing damage. Turns out I got lucky and I can just replace the pins and bushings. I would like to do all 4 lower pins and bushings while I have it apart, but the price of these things is astronomical. Does anyone have any other outlets to get them than Cat ? There is an Ebay guy too in NY but still crazy money. I could have some made but since they are worn how would we know what size to make, unless the parts book calls out sizes, was thinking of...

What are your boring thoughts?

jeudi 26 octobre 2017

It seems machines are getting bigger and bigger, there running them further past the point of repair. I use a York 4-14ET that has served me well over the years, but I think lately I've been asking it to do to much, Don't get me wrong it's done them all but the bores are getting bigger and holes further apart with no way to run center bearing, could go up to 2.250 bar and fix the chatter problem but I would still have horse power problem, what ya'lls are thoughts on hydraulic set up and...

deere 329D engine

Hi Guy's
it's been a while since I was last on here,
My 329D engine is shuffing out large amounts of black smoke so I got my local dealer
to run a enigine flush through it and it helped but doing so we found it is putting carbon back
into the fuel tank.
my question is what causes it and what is the best way to deal with it.
and no trade it in is not an option as I like this little goer.

Hitachi EX60 URG need electrical diagram

No prior electrical problems but now the starter (key) switch produces nothing. Turning the ignition on lights the dash lights and the fan and other accessories work.

I can engage the starter by jumping the high-amperage solenoid located just inside the engine door and putting +24v to the white-red wire (running to the starter solenoid) on the same unit. So the starter and it's interconnecting wiring is all functional.

If I could find a wiring diagram showing the basic pieces and...

ASV PT100 blowing out hydraulic cooler

Hi Folks,

I have an ASV PT100 Forestry track steer that has blown out it's hydraulic heat exchanger (the big radiator behind the engine). I can't see any reason for this, as far as I can tell, any fluid that flows through there goes right back to the tank. In other words, it's on the low pressure side and there's nothing between the cooler and the tank. I had assumed that a component downstream of the cooler (check valve, or what have you) had failed, and allowed the low pressure side to...
