Stored fault codes

These codes:
3517
3796
1004
3998

Are showing up on my case 580 super N. The company I work for brought it from the city and I seen these codes have been occurring for awhile and no one has done anything about them. I service my own equipment and I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what these codes mean because I do not have a code reader.

Thank you anyone for help

Caterpillar 315c Hydraulic problem

I'm really at wits end on this one Serial number is cjc01986
I get a call last week 315c had quit moving while digging ..15 mins later it would move but only for a few secs
When I get there it will not do nothing (engine runs no change in sound of engine moving hydraulic shift level ) I check fuses and all good I changed relays around and still nothing
I called and ordered a micro switch that is screwed to shutoff level ....repleaced them the next day still nothing ..Called Cat service Department and was tolded to check for voltage at solenoids System voltage is what I'm looking for and had 28 volts ...then I was tolded Top is lock out middle is swing third is travel all same part numbers so I can switch them around see if anything changes still nothing ...........I call Cat and have a tech come out next day
This is what puzzles me pilot pump is good psi 550 main pumps good 5800 and 5850
Now this is only thing he check and said Hey for ****s and giggles crank it up and see if she moves IT DID ...wtf....He hooked his computer up aND no codes...he did notice voltage a lil high and checked alternator 38.6 volts wow this is got to be it ...I unhooked alternator wire ( didn't want batteries or computer fried and loaded it on trailer got it to shop unloaded it and ordered a new alternator ...
Now after it was installed it ran 1 hour and stopped same thing ( voltage is 27.4 good )
Call Caterpillar back up and was tolded to check check valve in solenoid block for trash in lockout , swing ,travel block nothing .....
I know voltage is right I see it on meter I see nitro filled accumulator line move when level is moved down ..pressures are same on pilot and mains ..
Any thought on if it is trash where to look next
Are there any orfice fitting that could get pulled with trash ?
I under stand how this is designed level shut off hydraulic electric signal to solenoids but I cant see what hoses go to what and where before it goes to pilot pump

Hard starting Doosan

Ok so I have asked and talked about the fuel clogging the fuel filters on the tier 4 engines . I have come to believe it is mostly realated to to contaminated fuel storage tanks ..I have a question on the Bobcat Doosan . I have a problem with my s 450 starting . The machine sits in my heated shop and it is hard to start . Showed error code low battery . Dealer said it will get better to start as time goes on. Has 6 hours on it . I have 2 other units with Kubota motors that sit out side in well below Freezing in Canadian Conditions and will start up with a little grunt but other than that no problem . I rent these machines out and I was always partial to Bobcat because we never had issues .After reading most of this Forum I have heard less issues with the JD . It is very hard to drag a skid steer that will not run out of a backyard 500 feet Behind the house and on the far side of a pool .Bin there done it .Your thoughts

hitachi ex60-3/ john deere 190E drive motor hydraulic question.

Recently purchased a 1998 john deere 190e with 3500hrs which had one drive motor leaking. Still tracked and moved fine but was leaking from the cone seal at behind the sprocket. I have done a lot of looking to try and find any information about the drive motor which I found that my machine is basically a hitachi ex 60-2 or 3 and from the looks has the same drive motor as mine which is also a hitachi drive. I pulled the final drive off and was going to install new seals but don't want the same thing to happen again and possibly blow the seals right away so wanted to make sure I have a problem corrected if there is one. I do have hydraulic fluid in the gear side of the final drive so the shaft seal was blown as well. My question is I have been reading that these drives have a built in parking brake with seals that leak and blow out the other seals on the drive but looking at the part brake down on http://ift.tt/1KZMIi1 am am not seeing what appears to be brake o ring seals. I have all new hydraulic filters and am going to flush system and am going to check by blowing out the smaller return line from the final drive to make sure its not clogged and actually replace that line seeing as it had a few small little splits up near where it T's in at the swivel joint. The one to the other drive motor is new but doesn't look like the drive was touched so doesn't appear the motor had an issue just the hose had a leak. Is anyone familiar with these machines? Is brake on these done by pressurizing both forward and reverse hoses when not controlled to track forward or backwards on that side? I had my hoses sealed up to prevent dirt entering with a thick plastic bag and zip ties and started the machine after repairing the exhaust leak I had on the flared manifold pip pipe up to muffler it pressurized both and popped the bag which I quickly turned off the machine. I just wanted to make sure that was normal before fixing the drive and hooking backup just to blow the seals again. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Idlers on Hi-tracks,

Yair . . .

What would be the criteria used to determine the idler diameter on Hi-tracks?

To my eyes they always look "out of scale" and on the small side . . .I have heard certain models "scallop" rails which is what would be expected if a chain was running at those acute angles around a tight radius.

Just wondering, that's all.

Cheers.

Idlers on Hi-tracks,

buying a machine online JD644

So I found a used 644e with listed as 29K hours and a rebuilt engine on it. Interior doesn't seem beat up but it has a new splash of paint on it. Pictures don't show welds and the machine is listed as tight and dry.

My question is, what's the best option as far as verifying a machine? would it be best to hire a survey company? it will need tires or retreads. we're not going to put a lot of hours on it so good running and high hours should be okay, I'm thinking an e model might be easier to get parts for compared to a C model etc.

I'd hate to end up with a POS so I'd figure to ask the experts!

John deere CT322

Hi all,

I'm a new member and would like some information on a john deere ct322.

I own one, used for general construction in the summer and snow removal (residential) in the winter.

It's got 970 hrs on it and i would like to know how it compares to the newer john deere CTL's or other brands models. With particular emphasis on extreme cold weather operation (My dad has a kubota SVL-75 that likes to blow thick black smoke in the winter due to some type of valve freezing up...)

Basically i'm looking to know if it's a good machine to keep or if it's got some giant flaw or issue that i will have to deal with.

thank you very kindly for your consideration.

Rural area skid steer service?

I've been toying with the idea of trying to setup a business of my own to get away from working for various different companies depending on the season to keep some steady money coming in. I'm in a rural area on the IL/WI border and have a background in agriculture but very very limited experience with moving dirt, I've got plenty of experience with turning it over though! My current equipment is a Ford F550 pickup, a 23+5 gooseneck trailer, a Takeuchi TL230 skid steer with a bucket, forks, skeleton grapple, bale spears, 6-12' boom, and a snow box, I'd like to add a brush mower and a 4 in 1 bucket to the inventory as well. Do those of you with skid steers or other small equipment see a job market for small jobs, brush mowing/light land clearing, and general property cleanup or is a skid steer/ctl primarily used along side larger equipment and they have a hard time holding their own jobs? I'm not opposed to adding more equipment in time but to start out I'm trying to keep extra expenses to a minimum unless it's an attachment or two that can help me diversify my business. I'm not really looking to go loan $50k or more on a mini or something when I don't even know how to properly operate it let alone use it to benefit a business. I'm open to any ideas and suggestions or constructive criticism. I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes either who maybe on here and local to me, I'm just trying to use the equipment I already have to make an honest wage and to go home at the end of the day feeling like I accomplished something instead of punching out on the clock and going home with out that feeling of a job well done or accomplishment because no one else cares at work.

What is a good place to look up the specs for midi excavators? I am considering purchasing a different one than I have, currently my mini is about 7000lbs then my next size is a 15000lb rubber tire hoe. I think I'd like a 12 to 14000lb mini but not sure if it could handel manholes and storm boxes. currently I use my rubber tire hoe and I had to set a manhole yesterday and I got it done but it was not fun. my front end was floating about 2 feet in the air the whole time. dose anyone here use a large mini or small midi to move precast structures?

1150b life span?

Curious if anyone has an opinion on the lifespan of a medium sized dozer. I recently bought a 1150b, and the hour meters at 1200, only 4 digits. Machine runs and operates well. But the pins and bushings in all the key areas are spent.

Is this likely a 11000 hour machine? Or would a dozer of this size with that many hours be in for scrap by now?

I'm trying to figure out how in depth I want to go on repairing the loose ends on this machine.. Couple cylinder leaks, some rotten hoses. The blade center pin is completely worn out. Seems like only a few days without grease could destroy this..

Also transmission uses aw46?

Thanks for anything!

2007 case 450 skidsteer

Hi there, My bro inlaw has dropped off this case skidsteer cause the hyd lockout button up on right hand side will not unlock the hydraulics. We are going to dig into it this afternoon, but just thought I would ask for any info on common issues they have regarding this. Ive worked on fair amount of equipment, but never this model or brand of skidsteer before. Any help is appreciated. Also some history on the unit according to what bro inlaw says hes already done: apparently hyd lockout was only working intermittently they had changed the solenoid that performs this operation and said it fixed nothing and now wont work at all. Where is it? and what all is in the circuit for this? wiring diagrams? thanks for any help at all.:drinkup

john deere 510 backhoe

hello all, new member here, I want to thank everyone for all the help I have gotten from the info I have gathered for my case hoe.
I just got a new to me 510 john deere backhoe, so far it as been problem free. I know the balancer assembly has been a bear to get parts for and can make noise before it becomes bad.
my question is , the diesel runs well at start up and at 2100 rpm, but when you shut down the diesel there is this rattling noise just before it quits. if this motor had a timing chain I would say it was a loose chain, but the only thing is the balancer and maybe the injection pump. anyone out there have one of these beasts, and do they all make this sound?

Komatsu D155AX-3 Block Tracks

Hello,
I have a Komatsu D155AX-3 dozer and it's not turning and lack power. I want to do troubleshooting as mentioned on it's manual, I should test some pressures with gauge. So I need to block tracks to prevent moving and I know track blocking do by putting an iron pin between sprocket and chain links. But this way is difficult and unsafe. So is there any other way to blocking tracks?
Thanks.

Main vavle stuck?

JD 790 ELC
Has been under water
runs fine if you are just moving tracks but you cant run just one track it will kill engine. swing and bucket and boom will try to or sometimes kill engine. 6 line going to track control. If I take the 2 off that go to the hydraulic lock valve and loop them together and start engine I get hydraulic fluid coming out the fool control valve . Should that happen I am wondering if main valve body needs rebuilt maybe a valve in there is stuck? Or should I be looking for something else?

Cat 277B issues

Hi all, new here. I've done a search for my current issue, but have found not answers. My 277B which has the 3044 Mitsu engine, appears to be building pressure in the coolant system. Could this be a simple plugged vent in the cap, or would you suspect that I may have a more serious problem. There is no oil in the water, or water in the oil. After shutting the engine down, you can hear the gurgling or bubbling in the system. It seems to do it before the engine builds much heat also. A simple start up from cold, and a short run of less than 5 minutes will get the result.

I have also lost the control signal to the hour meter, even though it still has power to it, it just won't count up. Looking at the schematics, it appears that there is a signal from the alternator that tells the hour meter to keep time. Is it possible that the alternator needs serviced on that matter.

Thanks for any help.

Jim

Bobcat T770 or Cat 297D

samedi 27 février 2016

Looking to purchase either one of these two machines. I will use the machine for mainly dirt work in the summer and snow removal in the winter. I know the MTL will have a bit better traction in the snow than the CTL (Will have winter tracks for CTL) but not sure if the added traction of the MTL is worth the durability concern? Wanted to get some reviews from people who have tried these machines and see how you liked them. Both machines are in the ball park price wise (Within $2,000 of each other). Both dealers are good to deal with and have good support. Thanks in advance.

Please help identify these grinding...... wheels???

Hello

I purchased a large quantity of the wheels at auction and I have no idea what they are for or who uses them. Any information would be very appreciated. They assemble with the plastic hub pictured and there is a rubber gasket between the two and the void in the grinder cup is filled with a steel plate. I've spent forever searching on Google and can't seem to find anything similar.

JD 410D No crank No start?

Ok Let me start by apologizing My first post here is with a problem and likely I wont be much help to anybody else here since I only have the one backhoe and it is just for my personal use.

Second thanks for any help you can offer me here!

So on to my problem. I have a 1995 JD 410D 4X4 backhoe last night I started and moved the tractor to gain access to another piece of equipment and everything was fine. Later when I went to put the backhoe back in it's normal spot it would not crankover with the key, I also noticed the red light in the parking brake switch is now not illuminating. If I turn the key on and jump the starter relay under the hood the engine will start but that little red light in the park brake switch still does not come on and I cannot gain any locomotive power from the tractor, it just sits there like I have not released the park brake yet. I do not have a wiring diagram to go off of here so I am kinda at a loss. Where does the start wire go when it leaves the control panel? Does the starter wire connect to anything related to the parking brake? How does the FNR control play into this? Or better yet does anybody know whats wrong with this thing? Most of the wiring is in braided socks and in hard to get at places so it is going to be hard to trace these wires down to figure out how this works! And what does the "Logic module" actually do?

Thanks Again for the help!

Cat 320c left travel weak

Hi, i have a trouble with a cat 320c prefix PAB, the left track is weak, the travel motors are good and the swivel too, in a three revolution test in a low speed the left track makes three revolution in a 39 seconds, the right track makes three revolutions in a 30 seconds, but when I do other movement at the same time like a stick or bucket the left track speed increases.

I suspect negative flow control trouble, i measure the pressure in a left a right NFC lines, when i move the travel lever of the right track to full travel position the pressure in a right NFC line down from 350psi to 30psi , and the left NFC line is 350psi, when i move the travel lever of the left track to full travel position the pressure in a left NFC line down from 350psi to 30 psi, but the right NFC line pressure increase from 350psi to 650psi , is this normal?
when a move left a right travel lever, left a right NFC lines pressure down and the speed for a left track increases.

Help me save a 955k , having starting problems

Ok, i have a family friend who has a late 60s CAT 955K parked back in the woods. It has sat for 15 years, it was inside of a building but the building has now collapsed so i would say it has been outside in the open for 10 years.
The diesel is red in color and it has a full tank, am i able to run it?
Cleaned intake out, removed filter it was junk.
Added 10 gal of hydraulic fluid but needs 20 more
Put 2 gal of oil in it still needs 3 more but i want to make sure it will start and run for a minute
The antifreeze is nice and green when i pulled a plug of the side of the head, at the radiator filler cap it is just water
Was left in Neutral, ran great when it was parked, exhaust was covered, undercarriage is good.

But i dont want to do anything more until i can get it to turn over and start
I wired up two 12v 650CCA batteries to make it 24v, starter clicked, clicked, then turned over about 1/4 of a rotation. click, click, then 1/4 rotation.
so i stole 2 larger 1250 CCA batteries from mine and my dads truck, same thing. but then something buzzed and it stopped trying to start with the batteries in the battery bay, hooked the batteries up together then with jumper cables ran them straight to the starter ground and solenoid. turned the key, same thing. click click but this time no rotation. Engine is free and turns over by hand, i think i dont have enough juice. all the batteries i tried were hot and ready to go they even started the cars i took them out of when i put them back. Wtf do i need to do

sock, fiber roll, silt, soil, wattle storm water management niagara falls buffalo

feeling out the market need opinions and numbers from site contractors.
i will be manufacturing a product similar to the silt sock brand ( woodchip flex pipe, hose,).
that replaces the silt fence typically used in the past.
i have some ballpark prices that you roughly pay to buy rolls all ready to go as in like 8",12",18" but would like to get real actual prices you,ve paid just to purchase.
part 2 for me is the install labor , seems to go by the foot! im planning on both methods
1 is the install of the already made rolls
#2 gonna fill the roll on site and lay as we go.
best thing pending on the topography and angle, this product usually does not need any soil dug or trenching, simply lay down and stake if required.
there is different fabrics also , one is bio-degrade , lay it and forget it !!!!!
other can be a long last fabric if you ( or us ) want to pickit up and reuse it!!!!!
i might consider the whole job as we do everything you dont touch anything!!!!!
i have already the equipment just need do slight mods to existing hoppers, augers, blowers , and i have enough product to do well over 100,000 feet of 8" pipe . so initial cost is not very high.
im 95% positive i can be very competitive but dont want to give it away either.
this is a start up business for my son to take the reins on, and with my drainage experience to wont take long for him to do his own hiring for installs.
i,am planning on staying in the yard and keep my top soil operation in full swing with some time spent preparing the material for the pipe so he can spend 100% time on installs!!!

Thumb for Ford 4500 backhoe

Hello, I thought I saw a while back on here that someone put a thumb on the 4500 backhoe. I was curious if anyone had done this, and if so which one fits the machine well. It would just be a manual one of course. I've got quite a few stump to remove, would be nice to grab them when there out. I would not think it would need to be super heavy duty. Thanks

Cam interchange Case 188/207

I am wondering if the cams are the same between a Case 188 and 207 Diesel engine.
I know it will fit, but is the cam profile the same?
I have the 207 parts manual so I know the part number of that one. I don't have the 188 parts book so I can't check to see if the part numbers are the same. Does anyone know for SURE ?

What has happened is that my original cam gear has too much play. It's supposed to have 4 to 6 thousandth's or so,...mine has 25 thousandths.
So I bought a new aftermarket cam gear. But it measures the same,...too loose.
It doesn't look like a quality part. The teeth don't look like they're been cut, more like cast. Junk.
I have an opportunity to buy a decent cam and gear set up out of a 188 but wonder if the cam is an interchange?

This will solve two problems at once.

Thanks.

Tortie.

JS200 LC 2001 opinions please

I need an excavator for my own farm work and I've come across a 2001 JS200 LC with approx 13,000 hours for sale at seemingly OK money. According to the seller everything is working as it should, UC about 70% except the tracking is slow on 1 side. He says he doesn't want to sell it with this fault and has a fitter coming out to resolve the issue.

What are peoples opinions on this model and is there anything in particular I should be looking out for? I'll have a fitter give the machine a once over before purchase but if there are known issues with these machines I'd like to have an idea before I part with the cash.

Not another PC30MR-1 problem!

vendredi 26 février 2016

Hi there,

My machine has been temporarily losing the ability to lift the boom off the ground and travel.
All the functions seem very weak when this is happening, so it maybe all functions are having almost no power and the boom lift and travel are not really or barely moving due to having a bit of resistance.

This was occurring on the occasion, maybe 1 or 2 times a day but with this hot weather the past few days here in Australia it has been happening often, and affecting work.

Thursday was the worst, being 42 degrees C out side, it was happening at least every 15 mins and it was incredibly annoying. It usually only happens for a few seconds but Thursday afternoon i was working it real hard and the boom went week and could not get it off the ground at all after trying for a few minutes! so had to pack up for the day.

I thought it could be air in the lines because i did have this happen a few months back after i changed all the hydraulic oil, filter and strainer, but I do cycle the cylinders to bleed any air in the system and it still occurs no matter how often i do the hole air bleeding procedure.

Occasionally when the machine hasn't been used in a few days when starting it up the hydraulic pump sounds like it has air in it for a about 2 seconds then sounds normal.

If anyone could help with this i would really appreciate it.

S130 drive axles

G'day All

Have just replaced leaking seal & collapsed bearings on the front L/H axle of my S130 Bobcat, I left the chain drive all attached & rolled it out of the way to replace the bearings without pulling the whole box apart. Have got it all back together now, just wondering is there any set way of setting the preload on the tapered roller bearings? So you just do the sprocket retainer bolt up FT? Doing this bolt up pulls the shaft through the bearing until it's seated. Any little tips that I haven't thought about? Didn't want to over tighten bolt & load up the bearings to much. Or will it just take it up until it sits on the shoulders of shaft & sprocket? Thanks in advance.

JLG 450A 3 Functions not working

I have a 2000 model JLG 450A, Early serial number. Anyway, I bought the item recently at auction, and have fixed most of its problems. I still however have three functions that do not work.
-Basket level up and down
-Extension in or out
-Basket pivot. Right or left.
I can activate the function from the basket or the ground and have active coils, but no movement. I can hear the pump slightly labor under load, but no movement. Any ideas.

Froze up clutch on 15A D8 dozer

Help. We just serviced this old cat ,new oils, filters, and drained and cleaned the screen in the converter.when we started it back up the clutch was stuck in the disengaged position. It worked fairly well when we shut down for service. Any ideas as to what would cause this. The bottom fork in the clutch acts like it would move but the top fork is solid. I'm not much of a mechanic, but this doesn't make sense. Thanks::confused:

Case 188D Head Removal Question

I'm posting this separate so it doesn't get lost in the other thread for my 68 580CK project.

I have the head bolts/nuts off and am ready to remove the head. Other than driving something in between the head and block, is there any better method? I'm concerned about potential damage other than the head gasket which is toast anyway. I know that a few of you who look at this site have done this before and I am interested in your method.

So far, everything else is going along. One day at a time...

Komatsu PC 60-6 - Repair manuals.

Hello All,

I am not sure if this should be here or in the mini excavator section?

I have this older machine. I have several issues with it that I really need to get on fixing.

The oil in the swing motor keeps disappearing, but I cannot see where while running in the shop. I am guessing I will need to remove the swing motor and have it re sealed.

Lots of other things I should deal with but they are fairly invovled.

Does anyone know where I can find a complete set of factory repair manuals for this machine?

I did not find any on a google search.....

Any help is appreciated.

Hydraulic Line Busted in Digger

Hey all,

Thanks in advance for any help.

I own a very old (6k hrs) JD 210C Backhoe. One of the lines that goes through the boom itself has busted. Most others that have not busted recently look like they are about ready to bust.

I have experience in a prior profession running cable in buildings, and when you replace a cable in a wall, you tie another cable to it, and pull the new cable in as the old cable goes out.

Is there a similar technique for hydraulic lines? I have been Googling the heck out of it and just can't seem to find much on it. Any video I look up on YouTube on how to repair hydraulic lines just shows how to replace a line that is easy to access.

My main question is if this is the technique, what kind of line is used that can hold up and not snap off or get snagged. With cables, you are cutting off the ends, so you can tie a tight knot then just chop it off and wire it in. Is there a tool or technique for hydraulic lines?

Thanks!

DB

962g (3bs) lift angle sensor

Hello all,

Cat 962G lifting lever electro-magnet stops being actuated when Lift angle sensor reach 500 and then lift lever goes to neutral position.
I calibrated the Lift Angle sensor as described in the manual and again the boom stop lifting itself when the sensor reach 500 in the calibration menu (7).
The value 500 corresponds nearly with the 50% of the boom height.

Can I make the magent to be actuated until the boom reach 85-90% of its height?

T250 Starter Issues

Hello
I'm having some starter issues with my Bobcat T250.
We've had the battery replaced once already. We will put it in the start position and will only get "click click click" but if jump from the nut to the starter with a screwdriver in the back of the Bobcat she will (and use to) start all the time. Since the battery has been replaced she would start with the switch no problem but one week in a we are already having problems starting. My question is with a multimeter how do i go by checking for alternator problems? And how do i go by checking for starter problems? Any observations or advice is appreciated since our production is at standstill do to this issue. I can posts photos by request. Thank you again for any advice given!

Air vs juice Brakes

I started this thread because the Ford vs Dodge started to wander a bit.

The subject of keeping control on steep grades and the use of jakes is good. But the getting to the point of having to use an escape ramp is
totally the last resort. A few months after the new highway was opened on the Lewiston Id grade a driver for Reyerson steel got into
trouble and used the ramp 2/3 the way down. It had rained, snowed, rained, froze repeatedly. When the truck hit the ramp it didn't sink in the
pea gravel. He shot off the end some 50ft plus in the air. The load load of steel was impaled standing straight up through what was left of
the cab. Some say you can still hear him screaming on that part of the road. DOT failed to keep the the ramp tilled. The Lewiston grade
is the only one I've seen with the last escape ramp being in town.

The escape ramps dropping into Jackson Hole are on the opposite side of the road, you have to cross the uphill traffic to get to them.
If I remember right that grade is 10% for four plus miles.

CAT 420e IT hoe has weak lifting ability??

jeudi 25 février 2016

08 cat 420e IT with only 1350 hours. When I'm using the hoe to lift concrete bin blocks that weight 3400lbs it struggles to lift them. Anyone know what the lifting capacity of the hoe is? If my machine is off, is there something I can do to increase the lifting capacity? The size of the boom cylinder is massive and I can't believe how much it struggles with one block.
The engine runs perfect with fresh fuel filter. Front loader works perfectly.

CAT50D Rear wheel dustcap

Hi, I'm new to forklifts and I'm doing some long overdue maintenance on a CAT V50D. One thing's got me puzzled. I want to repack the rear wheel bearings but the dust caps aren't easy to remove. They don't have a raised lip I can get a screwdriver behind. They look like the sketch below. I've tried hydraulic gear clamps and a slide hammer but no go. They're in there tight. Any suggestions on how to get them off? I am thinking of welding on a nut for a slide hammer but that seems a bit drastic.

544B Electric/Injector Issue

I am having an issue with my loader that I don't understand. When running hard for a few minutes the engine stalls out. It will not restart unless I leave it for 10-15 minutes. Rinse and repeat.

However if I run a wire direct from the battery to the shutoff solenoid, it fires right back up and is fine. I have tested the battery and the alternator, both are fine. Anyone have an idea of what would cause this and how to fix?

I plan on replacing the shutoff solenoid but it doesn't make sense to me.

Hour meter reset to zero. New Holland LT185.B turbo track loader

Bought this rig from a local machine dealer last year. Model tear 2006. It had almost 1,400 hours on it with a price tag of $19k. Seemed like a fair deal at the time. It had cosmetic and track wear clearly from the gravel pit the owner said it came from but performed like a bulldog. Anyway, after about 200 hours of use the digital hour meter reset to ZERO. I didn't do anything to it. Was just working the ranch when it reset one afternoon.

Has anyone had anything similar happen to their machine? Is there a memory in the ECU that keeps track of the true hours?

I'm thinking the dealer conned me and knew it had this issue...makes me a bit angry. That's why I avoid them usually. Being the price was cheaper than market. This machine could have 2,800 hours or more if it reset twice at 1,400 hours. Would make sense too because it didn't look like a 1,350 hour machine, more like a 3,000+ hour machine.

544g Leaking Axles

Hope somebody here can help, I recently purchased a 544g from an auction and when I got it the hydraulic reservoir was low. I filled the tank to the line and my axle seals especially the left front started leaking until the tank got back to where it was when I got it. The problem is I can't understand how the hydraulic fluid is filling the axles I figure the seals are bad but don't want to change them if fluid is building up causing seal to push out. So I guess my question is what can cause this with the machine parked? it does have a front differential lock but the back is leaking also. Also the brakes seem to work fine so I can't figure it's them. Thanks in advance for any insight.

El 240B extremely hard starting. How can i fix this?

I have a El 240B excavator that every time I try to start it I have to crank for sometimes more than a minute. The use of ether just locks up the motor and wont allow it to start no matter how much you crank. The injectors have been changed once about 2500 hours ago. About one in every five time you try starting this machine you run out of battery before you get it to start so you have to stop and charge the batteries before you can continue. Once you start the machine though it runs like it was brand new and is one of the most powerful machines that we have it has even more power than our newer 322B. Another quirk it has is that when you do try to start it it will fire on the first couple of cranks but you have to keep cranking because immediatly after it fires it will fall on its face and you will be back to cranking. If you stop cranking once it fire and it dies you can start again and it will repeat the process all over again. What would cause this and what could I do to possibly fix this? The machine has around 22000 hours on it and the motor was rebuilt at around 15000 hours.

problems would be overheating, sand entering the filter...

SLOW THROTTLE RESPONSE 2012 John Deere 310J Backhoe Loader / 2wd

When you turn up the throttle control on the right hand instrument panel -OR- When you press the foot throttle all the way to the floor, It takes SEVERAL seconds before the engine gets to full RPM. A real disaster when trying to use it as a loader. Once it finally reaches full rpm it maintains full power under a load / very strong.

All new filters, not sucking air, and NO ERROR CODES!

Anybody experienced a mystery like this before? (I liked em better when they had a direct linkage from throttle pedal to injection pump - never had any problem like this for last 20 years!)

I stopped to look at a TD-8 G dozer sitting besides the road. They want $8500 and said the 3rd gear slips but one & two were good. Said the screen hydraulic supply was plugged. They had done quite a bit of work to repair the engine, new pistons, rod bearings, replaced some lifting rods etc. The engine started easily and idled well. The tracks are worn, the roller pins had been turned at least once but the sprockets still had life.
How much would it cost to repair the transmission? Any comments or recommendations?

Quoting shop and field repairs

I own a machine shop currently, but I'm looking to branch out into repairs. I've worked professionally as a truck mechanic and I have the tools and equipment in my shop to take on most jobs including major engine rebuilds and line boring. I'm not really set up to work in the field, but we'll get there. Plenty of insurance and that good stuff.

Anyway, I'm wondering how you guys handle quoting repairs. Does a customer expect you to estimate the repair cost without seeing the machine? How much are you held to the quote?

When I worked in the truck shop, estimating the cost of a repair was usually possible and we were usually close on the straight forward stuff. Service, inspection, brakes, wheel seal, clutch, water pump, etc were unlikely to have a lot of surprises. Even an inframe overhauls was usually easy to estimate unless there was a spun bearing or broken crank or something unusual.

In the machine shop world, I'm usually quoting making a new part or multiples of a new part. I give a quote and that is exactly what the customer pays. If I screw up, I take it on the chin. If I somehow come out ahead, I keep it really quiet. Things are very rarely done on "time and materials" terms and the customer is mostly shopping on price and sometimes lead time. Quoting so that we can make money and still get the work is the hardest part of my job.

I'd like to hear what others are doing.

Overall impressions of JD 470G

One of my customers asked me about if they're a good machine overall but i have minimal knowledge of JD. He has a gravel pit and runs 2 349E, a 349F, a330D, and a 330C for now. All the 349s were bought new and the E's both had new engines put in under warranty around 5k hrs due to extreme oil consumption issues. I think he's a bit burnt out on that.

He tells me there are a few ~2khr JD 470G he wants to look at that would probably be 1/2 the cost of a similar 349. I called a friend of mine that does quite a bit of work on JD machines and he told me that other that wiring issues, which most all JD hoes have, they are pretty solid. Also said the Isuzu is a little better engine but the JD engine is easier to get parts for.

Any wisdom welcomed.

This is not really that "OLD" as I was working for a year before it was built!

Came across these two pictures in an envelope yesterday while going through stuff at home.

They were taken in October 1992 when the truck was getting ready to be shipped to the quarry in Watertown NY after some major work was done. I tried to find a write up on it in my old files but think 1992 was before I had a computer at work to keep files on.

Truck is a 1969 Mack M30X1349. As I recall it had a NTA380(?) Cummins with an Allison CLBT5860 transmision. Brakes were straight air front drums with air over hydraulic rear drums.

This truck saw service in several of the quarries in New York State over the years. Hauled it's last load of stone for the company right here in Skaneateles NY. What finally put it out of service was the flex-plates that connected the engine to the transmission failed. It sat for a couple years and then was sold at auction, I believe to someone in Ohio who was hoping to fix it and use it to haul dirt out of a pond he was building.
