580c differential bearing preload

My 1979 has lost the side gear preload, replaced RH side gear seal and oring months ago only to find oil soaked pads and leaks again.
I plan to remove equal amount of carrier shims from RH and LH sides to maintain backlash.
Any ideas or precautions would be appreciated.
