580m won't idle

Working on a 580m and the original problem was no power and won't idle .changed fuel filter and drained tank ran with new fuel and still the same .Changed lift pump now it revs up better but idle drops way off and stalls. ADJUSTED IDLE SCREW WAY UP now can get to idle better but why did we have to turn the SCREW WAY UP
