Warm Weather

Here is a story from the 1975 Alaska pipeline days. I was mechanicing and welding at a place called Tonsina. it is an extremely cold spot about 40 miles south of Glennallen. It was amazing how much iron was there. A D8-46A had broken down and was waiting for parts. In the meantime other machines were breaking down and needing parts so this one was getting picked to the bone.

A few months later it warmed up above freezing and it turned out the Cat was sitting in muskeg. It started to sink. Within a few days it had gone from having the rollers stuck in the muck to being up over the tracks and to the floor board. Management put 3-4 mechanics on it to try and make it run before it went under. In the meantime, it was sinking so fast that they hauled in two D9's that got latched up to the ripper and a 14 blade for more tug and it got popped out. It was a close one and more so, I am glad that I got to watch instead of being assigned to the project.

In the end it got winched onto a lowboy and taken to the shop.
