Digging foundation around bedrock

mardi 24 mai 2016

I'm getting ready to build a home on a ridge which will entail a stem wall foundation to a depth of at least 3 feet to the frost line. There are two small outcroppings of solid shale bedrock and probably many more below grade. Much of the rest is fractured bedrock which can be dug with an excavator of at least 10 tons.

One option is to dig around the bedrock and set the stem wall directly on it and pour footing between outcroppings. Working around the outcroppings would probably mean increased foundation costs and much hand digging.

Another option, probably the best is to have an excavator breaker on hand and obliterate any bedrock in the way, but there is no excavator breaker available to rent in this remote region.

Third option is to have a skid steer breaker on hand and break out any bedrock in the way. I'm having trouble envisioning that because the skid steer breaker doesn't have much overhang and would be difficult to position without falling in the ditch. I could solve that by excavating an 8' wide ditch so the skid steer could work in the hole, but that would make a huge mess.

Fourth option is to build a frost protected shallow foundation (FPSF), but I don't really favor that idea.

I'm not an expert on this by any stretch of the imagination. I'll be renting the excavator.

Any suggestions?
