Cat 345 log loader question

I gotta haul one from the mill to the dealer next week. Anything I need to be aware of?

Do I have to move or unhook anything before I tilt the cab?

If I use my 416 b daily or even every 3rd day it starts without a problem, but if it's longer then 3 days

it starts but only runs for a second and stops. It then requires extensive cranking to restart. It seems

like it runs out of fuel. Do I have a fuel leak? Is there a manual hand pump to prime?

I've bleed the lines i'm getting diesel right to the injectors but it won't run.

I have a electric fuel pump.on the ignition key I have (bat)(sol)(ign)(acc) .

so I ran battery to bat,sol to starter,fuel pump to ign does this look alright.

potential new owner, looking for opinions please

hello all.

i'm in the market for a backhoe loader and have my eyes on a few.

the main one i'm interested in is a late 70's CASE 780. full cab, has extendable hoe, 3 buckets and the regular loader, plus the parts and service/repair manuals

second in line is a early 80's CASE 580B full cab, extendable hoe, and a clam-shell loader. only 1 hoe bucket

third in line is a mid 80's CAT 416. open cab 1 hoe bucket and a regular loader.



this will be used for farm use on my 40 acres. the land is extremely rocky(zero topsoil), when they came in and put my water line in from the well 800ft, we went down 6 ft looking for the rocks to stop(they never did)...it tore up their trencher and they had to do it by a backhoe, they used a 680 to finish the job, it did pretty good.



next summer i'll be building my house and have to cut section of hill side level, 150x200ft or so area, and about 6-8 feet deep on the top side. the waste fill will only be moved to the end of the cut to fill out the hill side more.. I was quoted by a local guy 8k for the work, and decided if I can get a hoe for just a bit more and have it for other uses..



it will be used to remove stumps that have been cut flush, about 40 of them, and to clean out some small ponds, and other work here and there. oh and if the ole lady has her way an inground pool later on.



I think the 580 will be plenty for me, but it is right in the same price range as the 780 minus the delivery charges on the 780.. , and the extra power will be there if I need it,



also I cant find much info online about the 780, except it was the biggest one ever made, and uses wheel loader parts on some of it. so any info you might have would be great.

Would you leave a city job to go logging?

So I have a little dilemma... A good friend of mine has offered me a decent hourly pay ($23hr) and a vehicle to drive to come run buncher for him. I'd be working out of town but home early fridays and home for weekends. I've operated equipment since I was a kid and have always wanted to go run equipment in the woods. Problem is, I currently work for a local city. I'm home everyday at the same time, good pay, great health care for me and my family (expecting kid number 3 in a few months) and a ton of vacation and sick leave built up. I'm just bored with the slow pace of city work and the lack of actual equipment work. What would any one else do if they had this problem? Forgot to mention this is his second season logging but he's had his own dirt/trucking company for 10 years or so...

looking at a used JD 320 skid steer

I have my local JD dealer looking for a skid steer and a 10 tree sheer to clear cedar in central Texas. I would like to spend about 12k on the steer which means I am looking at a machine with 5k hours on it. He said he did not want to sell anything over 2000 hrs or so. He has found a few and will go get it up north, run them thru his shop, fix anything that is wrong and sell it to me for 18k. My question is should I be afraid of a machine with 5k hours? Will it be significantly more problematic than on with 2k in hours?



He is encouraging me to buy a new sheer as opposed to a used one. A used on is 3k and a new on is 5500. What do you think? This is a well respected dealer and I am dealing with a guy who grew up here.



as for mechanical ability I can and will fix the small stuff but do not have the tools or expertise to fix anything major.



I am going to clear 135 acres of cedar and then probably sell it.

JD 310D transmission issues?

Looking for some insight on possible issues with my 95 JD 310D. Upon initial start up it will drive in both forward and reverse just fine, as well at thru all 4 gears. Once its warmed up I begin loosing power to a point that it will not move forward or reverse. I can shut it down for a few minutes and let it cool down, restart and it will work fine until it heats up again. When it stops moving, I have elevated it so that all 4 wheels are off the ground, placed it in forward and the wheel will begin to turn, but once you sit it down again, there just isn't the power to move it forward or reverse.



The only thing that I have done lately is replace the tranny fluid. I bust a line awhile back and ran to advance and bought tractor fluid to refill. I cant help but think this is the culprit since I haven't used the hoe much since then. Anyone else think the fluid type could be causing this issue?

rebuilding cylinder on 580sk

I just bought a 94 case 580sk And as if your sitting in the tractor facing the backhoe the left swing cylinder is leaking hydraulic oil and part of the seal looks like its gone. I'm very mechanically able, I've just never rebuilt a cylinder though. Should I remove the cylinder or is it easier to rebuild while still on the backhoe?

D3 Final Drive Leaking

My 79U D3 has a significant leak right behind the final drive sprocket, it's dripping down on top of the tracks. Anyone know what seal that might be? What is involved in getting to it and replacing it? I'm considering whether I want to try to tackle it myself.

JD 310B - How to hold Reversible Stabilizer Pads in position

Especially in soft soils, the reversible stabilizer pads will flip on their own when pulling stabilizers up.



My model (JD 310B) does not have any additional holes for a pin or 'keeper' of sorts.



I have tried bungee cords with no luck and thought about welding or attaching a chain and hook or something.



Does anyone have a way to hold them in position?

Komatsu d20 help needed

Need help please. I have a komatsu d20 qf-5. Last week I ran it out of fuel. I could crank it over and it would start but then die. It then started to just click and not turn over. I replaced the batteries but still the same. Any wisdom on what is wrong and what I need to do is greatly appreciated. I don't know what year it is.

I recently bought a 2000 New Holland 545D 4x4. My gut tells me to simply put my time and effort into this machine, fix PTO, replace a few lines for the Gannon box, and foremost find a way to adapt a Ford backhoe to it.



On the flipside I have 4 acres to clear, leaving select trees and pulling stumps for the others. The brute force of the track loader would be useful, a few stumps are probably as big as the 545D.



Should I go out on a limb and check out this machine or concentrate on making my industrial tractor 100% and just knock out my work in smaller pieces?

Kubota KX030 Hydraulic problems please help.

Hi All,

I have just replaced my engine (V1505) in my Kubota Excavator. I replaced the engine because it was loosing compression and eventually would not start.

when I removed the engine I also removed the hydraulic pump that is mounted on housing. I removed all hydraulic fluid at this time, which was emptied via the hydraulic hoses that go from the tank to the pump.



The Boom and bucket were out stretched when it would not start so I left it like that for a couple of months until now. During this time the cab has rotated about 45 degrees due to pressure from the bucket/boom position because I tracked the excavator off the driveway without being able to lift the boom or bucket off the ground. This caused the bucket to stay in position and over time the pressure caused the cab and swing to rotate.



I have now replaced the engine which seems to be working fine but now I have no power to my boom, bucket, swing nor will the cab rotate: Banghead.



I can track forward and backwards. The push blade still operates up and down perfectly with enough power to lift the unit.



I had no issues with the hydraulics before replacing the engine. :confused:



I have just put new Hydraulic fluid in which is still just below the glass view level but it is above the Filters.



I am thinking I need to bleed the lines/cylinders after such a long period under pressure?



I am new to excavators and any help/suggestions would be great...:o

Cat Excavator attachment compatibility

Hey Guys - been reading a lot on this site, we picked up a Cat 235 this January and am curious if there is a way to determine what attachments will fit it, for example looking for a hydraulic thumb and a pin grabber coupler and see some for sale claiming to fit newer machines but is there a way to see if it would fit my older 235? What is a Journeyman Tradesman?

G'day All



My question is what is a journeyman tradesman and what do you have to do to attain this title? I suppose I am also wondering how young people are trained in other countries (America, Canada and UK).



Here in Australia, if you want to become a mechanic (or any trade really) you generally leave school when you are 16-18 years old and start a apprenticeship. These are a four year agreement between you and your employer that they will train you to be a mechanic. This training is on the job as well as at government run training schools(Tafe etc) which may be attended 1 day a week or up to 5 days every 5 weeks. At the end of the 4 years, providing you have passed all the tafe work, you will be given a trade certificate and then can call yourself a qualified mechanic. Whether or not you have the skills to actually fix anything is another question.



When applying for a job it is generally required that you provide a copy of your trade certificate to show that you at least have a piece of paper that says you can do the job.

I am probably wrong, but I got the impression from reading some post here that if you like fixing/are good at fixing things you can approach a shop and ask for a job without any formal training. Is this correct or am I missing something completely. I am not trying to bag anyone out just a little bit curious.

Has anyone been running older dump trucks for ore hauling? I would like to get an idea of the average burn rates.



I have a '98 Kenworth T800, with a 17' dump bed. I have been offered a nickle ore hauling contract; short distance, min 2 miles, max 4 miles from loading to off-loading; I have been looking for estimations of fuel burn rates for owners with trucks running similar operations.

lacing repair

I have a friend that purchased HTC 60 ton. One of the lacing's on the folding jib is bent and needs to be replaced. Does anyone have acess to a WPS for lacing repair or know what particular grade of pipe the jib is fabricated from? Hes most likely going to order a replacement lacing from Linkbelt but if we could save a couple hundred bucks who wouldnt want to do that?





And just encase anyone is questioning i have my 6G pipe welding certs and I'm not going to be zapping this thing together with a 110V mig.

Virgins?

Not that kind. I need to put some tires on my 13 ton tilt deck, wondering what the experts think of using caps. The trailer only gets used maybe a thousand miles a year, and usually is loaded kinda light, but it gets squeezed into a lot of tight driveways, often backing in. I worry about peeling caps loose, but virgin tires will rot before they wear out. Opinions?

Custom Harvesting as hired hand.

I have been out of the game for quit s few years now. I have done the custom harvesting, planting and field work in the past. But now I am looking to get back into it as a hired hand. I was wondering if any one could give me a little insight on today's job market. What kind of wages are out there and hows is the availability of work looking. Are the companies offering some full time work or is it still seasonal. Are they offering any kind of benefits? When I was into this in the past you were paid minimal wages and worked liked dogs. Even if you had plenty of good skills and agricultural background. What are the wages looking like? One of the companies that I was looking into was Johnson harvesting. Does any one have any thing to comment on working for that company.

Boom trucks

Maybe this should be in the safety section but it's crane related so here goes. It seems here lately I've been seeing boom trucks laid over with the outriggers not extended on one side. I can understand trying to stay out of the road when your only working on one side but I've never taken the chance. I have traffic cones on the truck for a reason. My question how common is this. Seems like if your boomed up and out very much a small gust of wind could take you on over.

One hot 301.5!!!

Hey guys....could use a lil advice on my 2002 CAT 301.5. My friend and I bought a used 301.5 this winter to do a few odd jobs that both of us had. I finally got around to using it the other day and noticed after about 30 minutes of use it would run hot. I took a digital thermal gun and shot the engine (210f) and then the neck of the radiator (175f) the core of the radiator (150f) and the bottom tank (165f). I could tell the water pump had recently been replaced so I assumed it was good. You can bring the engine temp down immediately by turning on the heat in the cab....it was 91 degrees out so I really didn't need the heat on too bad..lol! The way the heater core for the cab is plumbed directly into the water pump that tells me that the water pump was doing its job. Today I pulled the thermostat and put it in a pan of water and brought it to 190 degrees, the thermostat opened as it should. This basically leaves the radiator as the culprit correct? I washed out the fins with hot soapy water before removing the thermostat and it was clean. I can see in the top tank and there is no corrosion or calcium built up inside. Would it be beneficial to remove the radiator and have it boiled? It looks like a TOTAL PITA to get the radiator out!



What am I missing? The only thing I thought about after disassembly was wether or not the fan blade was installed properly?

looking at buying a skid steer

I found a skid steer for sale I'm interested in. It is a 2006 cat 287b but im skeptical on it. It has a new hydrostatic pump and tool pump, new lift cylinder on right side, new pilot left hand handle. The glass is broke on the front door and it has heat but the ac don't work. Tracks look good in the pictures tho. Hes asking 21k or bo. It has 1900 hrs. I also found a bobcat t250 2004 with 5500 hours on it needs tracks, bucket is welded up, and the grill above the radiator is messed up, some rust also. He is asking 15300. Im 22 and that's kind of the prices I can afford. I found a 2002 wheeled cat 246 wheeled skid steer for 19k with new tires ac and heat with around 1400 hrs. I have a standard flow stump grinder I will be running also. Im just looking for some input thank you.

Well I got a 2002 Sterling Dump truck . last Saturday the engine started pump fuel into the rad and overflow . I figure the seals on the injector tubes got hot and all went downhill from there. It is a 250 hp engine . what other Cat 3126 can I put in there without messing with turbo , injectors . or the ECM. People have told me that I have to stay with the 250 hp class or larger which I want to do . Is there any changes if I find a 300hp ? Thanks

What are "normal" hours???

Hi all, Bought a 2011 John Deere 244J(compact wheel loader) off a dealer, was used as a landscape material loader...I will use only for snow removal. My question is I bought it with 2,000 hours, not showing any "codes" etc...I changed engine oil and filter, greased every fitting I could find.. are these "high" hours? normal?



I have NOT had hydraulic fluid changed or filter yet, have not changed "wheel oil", differential etc. Never worked on a machine like this, (had a small Kubota before this) I'm looking for advice from all you pros that use wheel loaders etc., I know mine is a small one, but I thought I would start here.Thanks!

CAT 330 thb telehandler load alarm malfunction

Hi, I have a CAT 330 which I use for moving timber on my housebuild site.



I bought the machine secondhand a few years ago and have had no problems with it, I have it regularly serviced.



At the moment I am not on site there much for various reasons and the machine, which is kept under cover, is only started and moved now and again.



Coming back to it last week, I started the machine no problem, but the load indicator on the dash shows into the red as soon as the machine starts and the alarm sounds.



The alarm sounds at any position of the jib, loaded, unloaded or whatever, until I turn the machine off (deafened).



I found a birdsnest in the jib end, which I cleared out as best I could, though access into there is very limited. I have no idea where the sensor is, or how it operates!



I could do with a Manual (nothing came with the machine), where/how is the best way to get one?



Any ideas about the alarm? -Many thanks for any information

EC210 Volvo Excavator-ignition problems

I am having trouble starting my EC210 volvo excavator. The ignition fuse pops every time I try to start it. I have changed the 30amp fuse and that doesn't fix the problem. It just blows again. Can anyone help with some other suggestions. Thanks, Jason

All goods was on stock, Daniel promise to me 2-3 weeks delivery by air.I steel not get anything. D3C lgp questions

Hello all I have a d3c 7xlo. She has been a great machine and has well paid for her self over the years. I have changed hydualic eng oil and tranny oils, but I have never changed the bevel gear oil is there any other fluid I need to change. How do I change the bevel gear oil and what type of oil does it take.





Next question when operating I don't know if I am pushing her to hard or what but she gets hot water temp goes over 190 f when I first bought she was doing this then so I changed hoses and water pump and thermostat the radiator has been roded a d I keep it blown out after each 8 hrs it does not use fluid but when the water temp gets hot so does the tranny. I am missing the fan shroud would this affect it??



Next thing is when in am pushing with the dozer in second gear about 3/4 throttle my dozer will stall is this right but if I run full throttle it helps. Also sometimes when I am pushing trees my left track will stop why is this

Engine kit opinions.

Soo, we have a JD 544e with 12430.0 hrs, the coolant in oil has finally gotten to a few ounces between pm's. I have done many different engines with aftermarket parts ,BUT that was when you knew that a certain brand was good, Clevite for instance. FP Diesel for another. Since the inception of china Im not sure and neither is my parts guy on what to get.

Any ideas.

Not opposed to OEM just testing the waters.



Also doing its first brake job, probably would have went longer if some dope hadnt put the wrong oil in the diff.

Clark C30L wont start

Just great now I have a Clark C30L P232100779781KF LPG that wont start. No codes. Has spark and either wont help. Is there a way that I can reflash or back to defaults without having to go through the stealership?

Suggestions for a mid size grader please!

Have a chance to purchase a low hour 1994 570B John Deere or a 2000 C 80 Champion motor grader. I have a small Sitework company in Texas & need a grader to finish pads, prep flatwork/asphalt & build/crown ranch roads. We use track loaders & skid steers to get the grade close, to this point. We call it "poor boying grading". Looking to be more efficient & professional. Can I get some thoughts please.

Ford 555d Backhoe alternator problem

I have a 1996 ford 555d backhoe w/alternator problems. The alternator light does not come on. The bulb is good. The alternator that was on the backhoe when I bought(not sure it was working), it did not have a thermistor plug but when I bought a replacement it had the thermistor plug. I installed it but still no luck w/charging the battery. I checked the W post to grd and it showed 0v. The people I bought the alternator say I have the problem and offer no help. Is there something between the alternator and battery that could be my problem?Thanks

I have a 9020b case .. When I first start it up everything work but after about 5 minutes I lose controls and my forward and backward?? Anybody help??

2006 Cat 267B - hydro leak behind motor

Hey all -



Recently my 267B has sprung a slow leak behind the engine. Running, under load, or parked - it leaks the hydraulic tank dry in 3-4 days. After a good wash and a topup I was able to figure out the slow leak is somewhere behind the motor on the back wall of the engine compartment; Ive tried everything to see where it is leaking from. Any suggestions as to how to diagnose and repair as I have been unable to locate a shop manual?

Resetting engine codes??? Cat 3126.

Just replace cam sensor on cat 3126. I don't have a scanner to remove fault code. How many times do I have to drive it before it will delete itself?

1988 D-6H series II w/ 3306 Cat engine

Serial number is 3ZF00730.

Starter took a dump this afternoon. I got it out and it has that nice sweet smell of burnt epoxy.

Should I let a local rebuilder look at it or is it better to just trade it in? It looks like a totally sealed marine style unit with a faceplate to bell housing gasket and rubber seals everywhere.

Problems with a ManLift AMZ50

Howdy folks, new member from Nashville TN with a problem. We have an AMZ50 at work that will not telescope from the controls in the basket and the engine is not charging the battery. I can't even find a manufacturer ID on the engine to try to find a manual for it. It is a gas/propane unit. Anyone have a wiring diagram for the controls or know what type of engine this thing has?

short block for a N844T Shibaura engine for a LS 170 New Holland Skid S

the engine on my LS 170 New Holland skid steer gave up its ghost and I'm in need of a replacement short block. Head was just rebuilt, but i can't find a local machine shop that is willing and able to take on the short block rebuilt. I'm willing to purchase one if anyone knows of a block that's been rebuilt. Or if anyone can point me in the direction of a shop near western NY that can take on the challenge, I would be very grateful.

"Donations" included in project bids

There is a job coming up for bid in our area for a community college project. It includes a couple nice building pads, all of it import dirt with trucks, finish grading, etc.



Along with their notice they sent out to the contractors, the letter states that any donations the contractors make, monetarily or work-wise, will be considered along with the bids that are submitted. This sounds to me like something which should be almost illegal.



Have any of you had experience with this kind of situation before?



What was the "donated" portion if your company was able to donate?



Is this a type of project that is worth running away from?



I would appreciate any input on the matter. Thanks!

Unannounced OSHA Inspection, always stressful

Had the OSHA inspector show up the other day for a project inspection. On these bigger projects we expect them at least once a year. We strive to make our projects as absolutely safe as we can but when OSHA shows up it is the most stressful day of the year for me.



Project: New Hospital, Status, shell is complete, brick being installed, inside 80% framed out, rough in and build out ongoing. Average 70 workers on site daily.



It went like this



8:30 AM OSHA inspector walked into my field office at 8:30 AM, identified himself and said he was going to audit the job. I asked for a pre inspection conference which he agreed he wanted also.



9:00: Had all subcontractors supervision gathered at the office trailer. The inspector gathered all names, companies, and received copies of each companies safety manuals. He then explained that we would tour as a group and he would interview workers from each company present. He asked for privacy to speak to them.



9:30: Left the office and toured the project. Looked at the 2 story brick scaffold and interviewed two workers. All was good. Looked at the 2nd floor debri chute and he had some questions and was OK with it. Our 2nd floor material landing zone has Garlock rails around it with a harness hanging on a retractable that is to be put on before the outer rail is swung open to land palletized stuff. He liked that and took pictures to share. After interviewing some electricians and fire alarm installers we walked into a break room. There was two microwaves plugged into a single power cord. He said that it was a fire danger as an extension cord was not to be used on a microwave. I mentioned that it was a heavy duty cord and that the entire temporary power system was ground fault protected. He asked the electrical supervisor what he thought. The reply was in a very calm, matter of fact voice. We are on a 20 amp breaker, the cord is rated for 30 amps, the microwave cords are rated for each machine with a UL listing on them. I don't see any danger. The worst thing would be a nuisance trip but absolutely no chance for fire or shock. The inspector said "I can't argue with that, let's move on. After a few more interviews we came across two cordless chargers, both with the outer insulation broke where the cord goes into the charger. The inner wired were intact. The framing contractor denied knowing who they belonged to. We all knew they belonged to his company but said nothing. The next people interviewed were the framers working in the area. The inspector came back to the group and stated that he asked the framers where their chargers were kept and they had pointed out the two in question. He stated that the contractor would get a non serious citation. We continued on and came upon a stairwell where the hand rail had been modified in order to trowel the concrete steps. Although the hand rail was up, there was a 7 by 10 inch hole along the edge where the stair jogged in which a foot could step. He asked me what I thought of that. I replied that it was not right, that they had placed the concrete the day before, and I then instructed one of my carpenters to fix it right away. We finished our tour and went back to the office for the post conference.

11:45 post conference. Generally he was satisfied. He stated that the framing contractor was getting a non serious citation for the charger cord. He stated that he had to go research the 7 x10 inch hole at the stairs and would advise if there would be a citation issued.

12:00 Noon: He left the site.

4:55 PM, I got a call from corporate safety that the OSHA inspector had called him and reviewed the inspection. He advised that the cord would be the only citation. He said that although the hole was a citable issue, he was not going to cite us because we took ownership and admitted it was incorrect, and we had corrected it immediately while he was still on site. If the framers had acknowledged the cord, I believe he would have been satisfied by them removing it from service.

In retrospect I guess that it's a good thing they are looking at minor issues. It means we are doing the right thing in making the jobs safer for the workers. It's still the most stressful part of the job!
