Transportable houses.

Yair . . . there was a bit of discussion on another thread about transportable houses and it seemed they were a little "looked down on" by some folks.

They are certainly getting more popular here in Queensland and a huge one went up the Highway in a seven piece convoy just last week.

For the style of house we build here in equitable climates (I have never seen a house with a basement) I believe they make a lot of sense.

They mostly sit three or four feet above the ground on (say) three inch pipe or box section columns and the construction with either timber or steel framing is identical to that of the same home built on site . . . all long sheet metal colorbond roofing of course and in some cases metal (corrugated) siding.

With the difficulty in getting tradesmen I would not even consider conventional onsite construction in a rural area . . . the wait is some times weeks to say get a plumber or a tiler and typically a home will take up to 12 months to complete.

Compare this with a house built under cover with all the trades on site, no weather damage if it sets in raining while you are waiting for the roofers and so on, there is no comparison in my opinion.

We saw a house similar to the one on the home page of this link set on the stumps and the yard landscaped and turfed in under a week.

Is this happening in other places?

Cheers
