Just traded the ole 1995 953B in on a 1999 953C. It has 5970 hours on monitor and 6100 hours according to the transmission ECM. It came across the pond from Germany. Really nice machine, very clean and no dents. The inside looks nearly new. I was surprised to see all CAT filters, so I think its been well maintained.
I guess my question is, what causes the C models to have a travel noise (hum), and a slight vibration which is much different from the B model. The only other C models I have ran were another 53C, and a 63C. Both of those had a similar sound. My B is quite when it's at travel speed.
After taking it for a test drive, I had a friend of mine (who is a certified CAT mechanic), try it out and he said it's common for the C's to make that hum when traveling at travel speed. He said its because the pumps are exposed in the C's, and obviously not in the B's HPCU. He said the 63C's were notoriously bad about that.
I trust the guy with my life, but to me it's odd that CAT would not try to make it a little less noisy. Any thoughts C model guru's?
