he SECOND problem I am having is that the brake pedal barely moves the master cylinde

mercredi 31 août 2016

The FIRST problem I am having is that someone painted over my decal that has my serial number listed on it. I am being asked for that number constantly as I try to figure out what parts may cost me. I am hoping someone on here knows of a SECRET serial number location so I can get this issue resolved ASAP.

The SECOND problem I am having is that the brake pedal hardly moves the master cylinder plunger at all. This lift sat out in the rain for about 3 years of no use. I am hoping someone can help me with a parts diagram & possible part numbers of this master cylinder.

The THIRD problem I am having is not having a parts diagram / procedure for relining the brakes / replacing stuck / frozen wheel cylinders. I am hoping that someone on here might have a procedure with pictures.

I would really like to repair & keep this machine for a good bit longer. Any positive help would be great. Thanks guys in advance!!

Cummins B3.3 Engine, Any Good?

Does anyone here have experience with the Cummins B3.3 turbo engine good or bad?

My understanding is that it is a joint venture with Komatsu.

It looks very much like some Yanmar and Isuzu and other Japanese engines I am familiar with, but with a different flavor.

Questions about New York State practical exam

I currently have a NCCCO, but recently moved to northern New York and , of course, this state doesn't recognize that license. I'll be taking the practical exam next spring and have a few questions to anyone who is familiar with the test. I've been told the test is given using 120' of stick. Is there any truth to that? Also, does NY use the zigzag cone course or a v style course? Thanks for any help.

Allu Bucket help

Hi Everyone! Great forum, looking forward to learning and maybe offering assistance once and awhile.

I am in need of some wisdom.

A good client of mine has an Allu ds3-17 mounted to a JD 544K Wheel loader that they use regularly for remediation purposes. They own the Allu and the Loader, however they are getting busy enough that they have needed some equipment to be brought in more and more. They asked if we would be interested in purchasing an excavator that we could mount their Allu to. I am new to big Excavators, but have owned 2 minis (Kubota 131-3 and an old New Holland machine) in the past. I downsized my equipment fleet at the right time (Alberta is in a big recession

I have a line on an 07 Cat 324DL with low hours thats been well taken care of. However, i am a bit concerned that a 24 ton machine isn't going to be heavy enough for an Allu that size. The wheel loader is JUST barely big enough as is. I like this size of machine because i can mobilize with my current tractors and trailers, if i go to a 30+ i'll need to find a trailer to haul it.

Do any of you have experience operating an Allu? Any tips and help picking a machine would be very helpful. I am having trouble finding too many folks in my area that have the experience.

Thank you!

Is there a quick fix?

I replaced link assemblies (same brand) on both my Komatsu PC200-7 and Hitachi ZX200 two years ago. Both sets of tracks developed the same problem. It looks like seizure on the pin/bush.The machines did about 1800 to 2000 hrs when the problem occured. The supplier says: 'Sorry, our warranty is 12 months/1500 hrs, can't help, but try diesel to free it." Really?. The machines worked on general hire, but never in water, and even working in water daily shouldn't cause it. Any suggestions on how to free the pin/bush?

segmented sprockets question.

Hey guys. A question about the sprokets on my 8k. They seem easy to change. Can I do it myself. A guy also told me to have the pins turned on the rails after the sprokets put on. Im thinking thats a big job right there. Im just wanting to put the new sprockets on for now so it wont skip cause they are pretty wore and I hate having the track so tight.

John Deere 323D User Feedback

Hi All,
Contempating purchasing a 323d track machine. My experience with the CT322 was beyond poor. I understad the 323d has had many improvements. Mainly looking for feedback on reliability, common issues and how many times it's been to the shop/downtime. Not as concerned about comfort features and things of that nature. The machine I'm looking at has about 600 hours on it, cab, ac, hydraulic quick attach and the EH controls. Looking for a reliable small frame CTL that's not going to be a pain with proper maintanance. Thanks

Cat Low Coolant Sensor 239-9957 Wiring?

CAT 3306, coolant system getting air bound?

Well, I'm back! We fixed the leaking water pump last week, and all was well for two days. (this is a CAT 3306 in a boat, by the wat) Yesterday, I looked up and saw water running from the expansion tank. It filled the 3 gallon tank from 1/4 all the way to the top, and started pouring out the cap (13PSI cap). Normally it'll go from 1/4 full when cold to 1/2 when it gets hot.

Now that expansion tank is about 3 feet above the engine expansion tank. What's weird is that when we pull the cap from the tank on the engine (below it), it bleeds off air, not water, and then the level in the other tank (it has a sight glass) drops down. What I don't understand is, how is air getting into the system?

We just changed a water pump that was leaking water into the oil. And it started right after that. I hope someone here can help, because chasing it is gettin' old

Pond Project Case 580

Few questions,

My first question is, I started a pond project on my property. There use to be a pond where I'm digging but the owner said it grew up and is now all razor grass and sludge. Everything was going great until I hit a spring, water started to gush out and then slowed down. I thought for sure the amount of water coming out would fill the small pond I had already dug.. it just bubbles in one small spot though. I assume the water table is that low? I took a metal rod (8ft) and it sucked it down all the way. I had plans of getting the excavator up here but it could very well swallow the entire machine. He said at one point the pond was 20ft 60 some odd years ago. Now we want it to be 5-6ft deep.

Much of the soil is a grey silt and a ton of clay. The first 6" on top is just a muck of dead grass and rotten wood.

My other question is, in digging I blew a cylinder seal, it was coming out pretty good. I bought the seals, is there a special tool to get them off. It looks like someone at some point buggered the cap using a screw driver and a hammer.

Bobcat 763 Hydraulic control valve (?) leak

I'm new to this type of forums. A friend of mine has a bobcat 763 C-series and is leaking hydraulic oil from what I think the service manual calls the hydraulic control valve (pages 79-104). I put a good 5 gallons of hydraulic oil before the dipstick could see any.
http://ift.tt/2ceb6QF

Attached some pictures of where I see the leak.

I'm talking to the local Bobcat parts guy and when I mentioned hydraulic control valve he was like what???. I sent him some pics and I'm trying to see if there's a kit with all the seals and whatever else I might need to fix the leak. Anybody knows if there's such a kit? That might help me guide the conversation with the local parts person. I'm not a Bobcat person so maybe he doesn't understand what I'm saying,

I have some mechanic skills (swap/rebuild engines, transmission/clutch, etc) so I was wondering if this is something I should do myself. I borrowed the bobcat and I will like to repay the favor by fixing the leak. Any help/tips/hints will be more than welcome. Thanks!

Iveco stralis high oil pressure sensor?

Hello,

I have had my oil pressure sensor warning light flash at me intermittently the last few days.

It seems the truck idles at 5 bar, and steadily climbs to 8 bar (maximum on display) after 50km before then flashing the sensor warning light.

I'm confused as to whether this means I have high oil pressure or a faulty oil pressure sensor.
Common sense would say it is the sensor, but it still seems to function up and down when throttle is released and pressed.

Does anybody know if this is likely a faulty sensor switch or is it telling me I have a blockage in my oil system somewhere?

truck seems to run fine otherwise.

D6 vs D8 dozing

Hey guys, need some input,on the field as a pro·té·gé,a dozer is my 1st machine of choice,so am in a site and am learning from two seniors, one is operating a D6 and the other a D8,been on the D6 more and got the hang of it,its easy to put the blade on the ground since I can see the cutting edge clearly, this dozer is a 6way so the blade's boom or the attaching mechanism goes under the belly, recently got on the D8,big machine, the blade doesn't angle as the D6,my dilema is tht, unlike the D6,I can't see the cutting edge, the two corners of the blade since the attaching mechanism is bolted at the edges so its more of a feel instead of sight,I ask the senior and he tells me to look beneath the blade,on the left side that is,so yesterday was my 1st day on the D8 and my other senior told me to get used to it because they are many in our market, any thought on the same will be highly appreciated.

JD 310 SG value

I can check the sale sites and see what they are asking for them, but that doesn't mean they will sell for that. RB is a good tool, but auctions don't bring what private sales do imo sometimes. Here we go again 140M DOWN

Hello everyone, Well last fall we took delivery of a brand new 140m for our sister shop, the other day after getting finished her third pm the operator was on his way to one of his roads on his route to be graded and he noticed a red engine alarm and a low oil pressure warning on the display he than immediately pulled over and shut down and called for our mobile mech, our mech arrived and did his inspection only to find the oil filter plugged with metal from inside the engine, NOT A GOOD SIGN!!! Low and behold we have seen this before at our own shop with our 140m, there were not any codes indicating any problems prior to the engine alarm, the pm was down correctly by our mech this is a major engine failure at 1500 hrs ours had a major engine failure at 900hrs both engines are c7's also I believe this machine had a injector problem about a month ago, Cat is going good for it as far as I know but now there's the down time which is costly, the amount of money that we pay for this product it should by all means be more reliable Cat has alway's been known as a quality product I run a 140h has over 10000 hrs on engine never touched still runs stronger than our new 140m with half the hours anyway is anybody else running the new m's having similar problems I figured Cat would have the bugs out of the m series by now, your thoughts on this issue are welcomed thanks everyone

D6C Blade tilt

OK, I admit I have a bit of a stupid question.....................

I was going to tilt the blade a bit to get more of a bite and when I went to do it I found it has only one screw type adjustment on the right side on the unit as you face forward. It attempted to turn it with no luck and it appeared to either be screwed on way too tight or wasn't meant to be adjusted.

The mechanic inside of me looked for signs of threads but it sure seemed like this wasn't meant to turn.

The cat manual shows two threaded rods on each side. Mine has a hydraulic cylinder on one side to tilt one corner down lower than the other using foot pedals.

Am I crazy or should I be able to turn that opposite side? I am taking some penetrating lube and a breaker bar with me tonight and see if I can get it to budge.

UGH.........

Interesting problem :Banghead

Bought the backhoe 4 years ago, worked fine, always started right away every time.
All of a sudden it wouldn't start. Checked for fuel at the injectors, but none there.
Changed the mechanical fuel pump, and bled the air form the various locations.
Had to use quick start to get it stared for the first time.
I ran it for about 15 minutes, with no problems at all, purred like a kitten.
Turned it off, and started it again right away. Again no problem. Did that about 4 times in a row.
Again no problems.
Let it sit for a couple of hours, and tried to start it, it would not start, it just turned over.
Used quick start, and once it was running, went through the same start/stop procedures, and everything was fine.
Let it sit for a couple of hours, and problem came back.
It has a Bosch fuel injector with the 4 fuel lines coming out of the back, not the top
Anybody have any ideas what is happening

Komatsu PC220LC-3 Engine Stalling

I bought this machine with a non working hydraulic pump, and put in a reman pump. The engine stalled frequently under normal operation. The new pump failed at approximately 200 hours. The instrument panel/monitor is not working. I am guessing that the controller and/or monitor are not working properly, and therefore the TVC valve is not de-stroking the pump. The people rebuilding the pump are saying it may be the main relief valve, but because of the electrical issues, I am thinking otherwise. Anyone have any knowledge to add? Any other thoughts?
Thank you,
Steve

Dispatcher or Teacher

Hey fellas, figured some of y'all have been doing this for a while and I've been on the road now for just over 5 years at a JD dealer. Have two different positions being offered and not sure which way to turn or to just stay in a service truck. One is a dispatcher, somewhat of an advancement but lots going on daily. Second option is an instructor at a college next town over. Pay cut yes but only working 7-1 with a school year schedule...will allow lots more time with family and possibility to do side work. Any opinions/recommendations appreciated.

School me on transmission PTOs

I have a piece of equipment that has an Allison AT545 trans in it. I'd like to move the hydraulic pump to the transmission from the motor because of a long list of reasons I don't have time to type :) However I'm a complete newb on PTOs. I'll be putting a fresh trans in at the same time and the Weller Truck store that I'd be getting it from recommended a Chelsea 230 series PTO. It's air activated because I'll be kicking it in and out a lot. Here's my questions: Does the transmission have to be in neutral to power the PTO, or will it work in drive/reverse also? I ask that because this has hydraulic steering on it and I'll need hydraulic power as its being driven. Some told me yes but it will make horrible noises while being driven. I don't want to tear anything up, I just need a setup that works. Thanks for any and all help here.

Root rake for clearing brush?

Ok, I think this will work ok, but I'm a weekend warrior. So much so, green horns may laugh me right off my backhoe, but here goes the question for the HEF brain trust:
I have a Cat 446D TLB with a 4in1 loader bucket. The hydraulics up front and the machine in general is stout as a I could want it. I'd like to strap a root rake to the loader bucket and unearth some thick brush on my property. Ideally, I'd like to do this on about 10 acres give or take. Note, I'm not looking to just pile cut brush, I actually wanna take it out of the ground. Most of it is 1"-3" thick woody Southern California chaparral brush. Is this possible or is it just another one of my hair brained schemes? Im thinking this is the best way to uproot this godforsaken stuff, as opposed to digging it with the hoe. I'd like to leave the dirt itself as unscathed as possible.

Any one want to help out a newbie with an old Link Belt excavator?

Hi guys! Long time lurker and thanks to anyone who takes the time to answer any of my questions! The machine is an 1989 LS2650 C11...bought it with the hopes of getting 200 hours out of it doing some stump clearing and ditching around my place and all was going good until about 120 hrs.

Issue #1. Last fall the hydraulic cooler developed a leak so I had it repaired. The 2 hoses that connect the cooler to the piping ended up being in less than desirable shape and actually leaked a tiny bit. So I called my Link Belt dealer and gave them the SN# of the machine and they ordered up the hoses..well I finally got around to putting them on last month and they were 4" shorter than the ones I took off...They do connect the cooler to the pipes but are barely on there . Originally it was double clamped and now I can only get one clamp per connection...I called back the dealer and they say that Link Belt says they should be 16" , not the 20" I had and they didn't have any kind of solution for me other than try to source the hose locally...the real problem is that it's a 34mm id hose I cannot for the life of me track any down..have any of you ran into this before or know a place that would have 34mm id straight hose?

Issue #2 I didn't notice it last fall when burning stump piles but now this summer the couple times I've been able to use it ( 6 day a week job and the rainiest summer I can remember have limited me) after about 45 mins of hard use, I get what sounds like air in the system...especially when I say curl the bucket and then swing ...when I slow the swing down and open the bucket I get a very loud sound of air in hydraulic noise...I've been using aw46 in this machine and it had a new pump shortly before I purchased it but was wondering if I should be using 68 oil?

Thanks again!

p.s. I've owned at one time a Case backhoe and payloader but this thing is by far the funnest to operate! I think I might be looking for a career change :)

One big stump

After a few hours Saturday, I dug out some more for the concrete trucks to get into the pad to pour the foundation. We have some big red pines which I downed. Few hours with the hoe and I finally moved the stump out. I figured the front end loader would pick it up. With the 207D tach'd out it lifted it about an inch and the pressure relieve was hit.

I was able to drag it to the field where I used the MF 165 to move it to the stump hole to rot. I have to say the case 580 is one hell of a machine :usa

The diesel solenoid seems to be working ,i can feel it clicking and just to make sure i pulled it out turned the key to see it was working correctly

I think there is a neutral switch on these ? I can see the neutral switch light up when i pull the controls back

Im getting diesel and it cranks over fine . I just dont know what else could be stopping it from firing ?

Straps and Slings

dimanche 28 août 2016

What do you guys use for slings.

I have assembled a small collection of four leg chain slings, wire rope slings, etc. All from auctions or just sweet talking people into giving me stuff that they do not care about.

But I find that 90% of time I use the same set of four 20' nylon slings over and over again, sometimes folded in half and sometimes not. That seems to cover most of what I do and does not involve unpleasant lifting of heavy straps or chains, or cutting my hands with wire rope strands.

I am wondering what everyone else is using.

I suppose that wire rope slings and such are useful more for repetitive heavy duty work like at a concrete casting plant or a big construction project, or some such, but not for one day projects.

Anyone prefer endless slings to two loop slings?

Any comments?

thanks

Wheel stud removal on spoke Dayton wheel, heat w torch or not?

I have a bad wheel stud on spoke type dayton wheel, w wheel wedges.
The stud is real froze and someone basically tore off all threads trying to remove before at some point.
I think I can apply heat to stud without heating the rim too much, but kinda scared to try it, seen too many videos of tires blowing up from pyrolisis.
This is an old moving trailer 44' with dual dayton wheels.
What is the best way to replace stud?

Can I air up brakes with Shop Air?

Anyone care to explain exactly how I can air up trailer brakes with shop air?

I am wondering if I can buy a glad hand, hook my shop air line to it and release the brakes.
I don't have a semi available and want to spin dayton type wheel to tighten lug wedges and true wheel.
Do I have to use 2 glad hands (service and emergency) or just one.

Hey all. Had the Mitsubishi k4n completely rebuilt. Engine won't start. Bled the injector pump. Seems to not be getting fuel to the injectors. It sounds like it wants to fire but it wont. Any ideas greatly appreciated as I only have time to work on it on on Sundays. Thanks in advance.

Hydraulic oil gushing out the drive motor sprocket fill plug

Got to play with my new Deere 693B feller. Made excavator. Saw a bit of a leak on the top bung, went to remove it to seal it up. Hydraulic oil came out like a waterfall. Checked the other side, same. No oil anywhere. Mind you it was only driven little bits, but should that not be full of gear oil? My first thought was the drive motor is leaking into the gearbox.

If it is a motor seal, how long/ expensive to pull and reseal?

Oliver-Cletrac crawlers

Has any one ever seen or maybe have pictures of an early FDLC crawler. they were built during WW2 and were equivilant in size to the D7 cat. They had a single upper track roller which gave the track a pronounced hump, the machine we had was ex U.S. forces and was left behind in N.Z. after the war. It was a good machine and we used it in re-claiming large areas of peat swamp.

new contractor

so a few months ago I thought about buying a excavator went looked at all these places went online. Well I dint buy one I however did buy a Kubota tractor for less then what my budget for a excavator was so I put that money in the bank. When the Kubota dealer delivered the tractor they had a problem with my drive way there is a tight turn and if not careful your going into the ditch. I decided to use the extra money I saved and get a contractor out and expand the turn just the turn which would meaning adding a culvert pipe and filling over it. I don't think there was a lot to it but I called maybe 6 contractors all local 5 out of 6 gave me about the same price which I was close to figuring it would cost that much but the 6th was a fairly new company I think maybe 1 or 2 year old company. The quote I was given by that company was about twice what any of the other contractors was. I'm just wondering if you read all that is that the reason for that quote would be lack of experience or just trying to have me pay for that new truck they had or something because I was just lost with that. I know I don't know what it takes to run a company but I just don't feel like that was a reasonable quote. I still had the project done only took the company I went with a day to do it.

Race Car Wheels

Thought I would ask on HEF since I seem to get the most honest responses from everyone. This is for my toy and just wanting to get some opnions.

So I have been looking around and really like the Race star wheels. Is anyone running them? What are the pro's and con's? I like the looks of the dark star but haven't seen them in person. I see you cant buy them from the factory only dealers. I looked at a lot of dealers and found this one seems to be the cheapest if you go to there FB page and enter a promo code. Other then that seems like they are all about the same price.

Ongoing 644E repairs, fun and more fun!!

Well, got the axle out, a Kubota M7040 with forks won't lift a 644 axle, so its over 2000 pounds but it curls it easily, so I'm guessing around 2200 pounds, One axle stub was good looking, nice and clean the other axle tube was full of crap, a ton of grease mixed with oil to make about 3 gallons of nasty slop.

The ugly axle looks like the retaining bolt fell out and the axle ran out past the bearing, chowdering the hell out of the housing, will replace both bearings, cleaned out the housings and both axle end seals are in backwards, good going doofus. Will be getting new seals and bearings, sending it off to JD to get things pressed apart and back on, will rehab the housing with a shim and some epoxy to make a new seal surface. Should be easy enough, just has to hold the grease in.

Other side bearings look good overall, axle tube nice and dry, both seals in and facing the right way even.

Now the bearing preload, it seems there's some shims between the planetary and the inner bearing, combined with axle length sets the preload. The book lists some pain the balls method of checking the bearing preload only with the axle assembled and under load, then measure vertical deflection, screw that!! I'm thinking shim and pry, measure axle end play and shim it down to just a couple thou when prying back and forth, axle half housing sitting on the bench.

I am new to Skid Steers

I recently purchased this used 272D Skid Steer, never having operated a wheeled skid steer before (just a bit of previous experience on a tracked skid steer) & now have about 20 hrs of seat time on this one. I was impressed with how nice they are for doing finish work in dry conditions, even for a novice like me. Have run dozers a lot, but this is a new concept & really like how it operates. We will be using it for winter snow removal work & also a lot of time spent on gravel surfaces, so elected to go with a tired unit, in lieu of tracks. Any idea what would be an ideal width for a snow bucket, for a unit of this size? We plan to use it for loading snow as well, so will want to use an bucket instead of a pusher or blade. It is a 2013 model year with just under 700 hrs on it. Name: 20160828_084554.jpg Views: 0 Size: 155.5 KBName: 20160828_084613.jpg Views: 0 Size: 181.1 KB

NEW HOLLAND Lx665 (1994)

Hello, recently purchased a 1994 NH Lx665. The machine was working fine. I was lifting a pallet of bricks when the front rows of the bricks had fallen off the skid. I unhooked the seat belt and exitted the machine (while it was still running). I threw the 100 or so bricks back up on the pallet, got back in the seat, buckled up the seat belt and the display says "LOCKED". Shut down the machine. Checked the seat belt switch, the seat switch, restarted the machine same thing. The machine will start, and move back and forward. The display still says "LOCKED" and the foot controls won't operate. I don't know how to get the machine "UN-LOCKED" Any HELP would be appreciated, Thanks

D4H Master Link bolts shear fix

samedi 27 août 2016

Right track outer 2 bolts are sheared off, inner 2 bolts still holding track together. Now, can these bolts be drilled and extracted out so we don't have to separate track or would it be best to get a new link and beat out fouled link to replace it?

Bobcat 331 Hydraulic Reservoir Breather Cap

Has anyone cleaned one before? I seem to be getting some pressure in tank as the breather cap is hissing after a good run. And plastic tank seems pretty tight...worried too much pressure is building up in tank. Oil is clean, no foaming or anything.
Wondering if anyone has cleaned one or taken it apart (if possible)?

Info regarding Track skid-steer Loaders - Pros/Cons , Sizes. WHeel vs Track..etc

Hi Guys,

I was wondering if anyone could assist with my queries or point me in some directions online.

I am after A track Skid-steer loader as I am starting a business contract with a large home-building industry - I know the person who does the hiring and costing and advised me to get myself a loader and truck and there will be work which has got me investigating the equipment. I have fork lift license a truck license and will need some training on how to use a loader which shouldn't take me long, I will be with a partner as we are going half on everything.

I have some questions relating to the loaders -

The loader will be for soil and rubbish removal

Are Track styles more efficient for this type of work ? I have seen Wheel loader with a rubber track around the wheel is this a modification or something from factory, is it a modification worthwhile in terms of price, if wheel is cheaper is a cheaper option to buy this and modify in this fashion?

I am in Australia and Have seen loaders from 20k - 90k AUD It is quite a large gap and since I am new to this business I would like some advise from more experienced professionals.

If you were in my shoes would you purchase a new loader or a good second hand?

What are key things i should be looking at when purchasing a loader?

What is considered a low hour machine?

For home construction what size would you recommend? Am I looking at payload size as a main purchase indicator for this type of work?

What are the servicing costs and how often should you be servicing your machine?

Is brand a huge thing in this world or brand is not that big of deal, majority of the loaders are "roughly" equal mechanically and price differs dramatically cause of brand and interior luxuries? E.g Close door cabins, Air cons etc... (Sorry if this is a stupid question, I am trying to think of anything and everything to ask)

Is importing a machine worth the time in terms of saving money?

I am running out of things to ask :) are there any other important factors I am missing or should be querying? I really appreciate any answers that can assist me or point me in the right direction.

Rgds

Andrew

Cat 904b drive problems

having some drive issues with a cat 904b. it doesn't seem to have the power or speed it once did. It has new cat fluid and filters and is fill to the proper level. I've checked that the brakes
aren't partially applied service and parking brake. I've tested the creeper valve is properly adjusted. I've tested the pressure the pump signal pressure is ok. the charge pump pressure is ok. the high pressure drive was low didn't even register on a 5800psi gauge but it has to be making some pressure because the machine still move forward and reverse. I tried swapping the test port and came up with the same results. I'm going to remove the relief valves tomorrow and inspect them. is there anything else I should check short of pulling the pump?

Titan weld on thumb install.

This is my Titan 36" weld on thumb install:

This did not come with instructions and I'm not saying this is the right way to install one but its how I did it and it seems to work okay.

First off my welding is limited by lack of skill and equipment. My welder at home is a Lincoln SP100 mig. I was doing this outside with a light breeze which isn't the best conditions. I turned the heat all the way up, set my wire feed at 4, and cranked the shielding gas up to 28 CFM. Each weld required 3 or 4 passes starting as deep in the groove as I could get and working my way out. This little 100 amp welder has a 20% duty cycle so I have to weld a couple of minutes then let it cool for 8 or 10. Takes patience but it gets the job done.

Name: IMG_1309.jpg Views: 1 Size: 29.4 KB

To set it up I curled the bucket all the way in and pulled the dipstick in to a point I could rest it. I assembled the thumb components and set it on the boom resting against the bucket. I set the stow bracket so the thumb was in contact with the bucket teeth. This had an unplanned benefit in that when I went to stow it after use I could curl the bucket all the way in and the support arm holes were in alignment with the stow bracket. Of course I had to set it up and mark the location where I needed to grind off the paint then set it up again to weld.

Name: IMG_1306.jpg Views: 1 Size: 49.8 KB

Name: IMG_1307.jpg Views: 1 Size: 38.6 KB

The support arm was rounded on one side but they left the back side flat. Either way I installed it would bind before the holes lined up so I had to grind the ends so they were rounded on both sides. The length of the support arm isn't long enough to set the thumb a full 90 degrees. I was hoping to be able to set it slightly forward but that isn't possible with the supplied support.

Name: IMG_1302.jpg Views: 1 Size: 37.4 KB

This is one heavy hunk of metal for the price of $215 shipped. The thumb has 5/8" sides with 1/2" front and back plates. The mounting and stow brackets are formed 1/2" u channel. The support arm is made from 3/4" sides with 1/2" front and back plates. It won't be anywhere near as handy as a hydraulic thumb but will be much better than no thumb at all. It could be converted to hydraulic but the cost isn't in my budget right now.
