Newbie trying to decide on '75 Case 450

dimanche 25 octobre 2015

Today I looked at and drove a 1965 Case 450. Advice would be appreciated. Here's what I know:
- Hours unknown. Engine said to have been fully rebuilt in 1995. Since then the loader was used for back yard sizable dirt fill in.
- Recent $1k fuel injector pump rebuild.
- No ROPS but rather a well made protection canopy.
- Loader arms have slop at pins.
- Small leaks at some of the hydro cyls
- Brakes work quite well. One recent new mater cyl.
- Tracks are stretched to a few inchs remaining.
- Track stretch pistons/rams are jerry-rigged with a plate to keep tension as pistons/rams don't hold long.
- Started up easily at 57 degree F outside.
- Cold start push button between levers clicks at solenoid but does not crank (I don't understand this contraption). Cranking is achieved by use of screw driver to short across posts on starter solenoid. Not sure what proper start/cranking approach should be... turn the key?
- Seemed to run great. No smoke of concern. Gauges readings seemed ok. Clicks though all gears and holds tranny pressure stable. Did not try the high gear selector (down by left ankle).. just ran in low range.
- Track sprockets teeth are blunt vs sharp teeth.
- Main track big wheel said to be worn... the rib around the middle said to show wear.
- Prior and current owner have high mechanical ability and appear to have kept the machine lubed with basic maintenance.

My use of the loader would be for really only a handful of hours a year for odd jobs at my pastoral property.
Cost is $3k

Questions:
- Naturally ROPS is desirable. Should one walk away for a track loader without one no matter the price?
- What items that I've listed above are big flags for pro and con?

I'd greatly appreciate your expert thoughts.

Many thanks!
