Repair of Crack in Roller Frame on D5G and Source for Undercarriage Parts

mercredi 16 avril 2014

The outer roller frame snapped right off in front of the front roller. That leaves the idler without support on that side. Maybe someone can help answer a few questions about how to repair this.

I'm thinking of welding the broken off piece back on, or making up a new replacement section to extend to the idler. It's either that or buy a replacement frame part, new or used.

Looking at the frame piece, it looks like a fully enclosed channel with three sides cast into a U and the fourth side welded in to complete the box, for the length of the roller frame. The cast metal at the break looks as if it might be cast iron; it is porous looking like cast iron. The fourth side looks like steel. Please tell me that I'm wrong about this being cast iron!! Welding/repairing cast iron is a lot more difficult than if it steel.

It's also time to replace the rails and sprockets. I would be interested in hearing opinions on the comparative quality of the different options for new rails and sprocket segments. Choices include Cat, Trek, and V-Track. I know that Cat is good, but how are Trek and V-Track for durability? Any other suggestions? And where is a good place to buy these parts in western Canada?
