Having problems with CAT hour meter?

mardi 23 septembre 2014

Thought I'd post about CAT's typical problem with their hour meters on their earlier A and B machines. Often times you'll see the screen beginning to fade, then a couple numbers begin to disappear, only to end up with nothing showing. I have found this can often be fixed in ten or fifteen minutes without buying a new meter (around $75 bucks now), and your original hours will be back on the display.

Unscrew the little torx screws, pull the meter out, unplug the three wires (note how they are attached) and look through the clear plastic housing to see if the lower circuit board (the one closest to the face) inside has come loose on one side (or both). If it has, I've simply drilled a hole in the middle of the loose side, and take a right angle dentist-like pick and push the board down. Before you pin it down (by drilling a couple holes in the corner and inserting very small screws), plug it back up, hold the circuit board down and see if the hours are displaying. If they are, then pin it. Seal the hole and screws with RTV and you are good to go.

CAT knew they had a problem because the new meters are built so that the circuit board are pinned with molded plastic on the corners and will not vibrate loose.
