Komatsu starter safety relay

dimanche 31 août 2014

Hey Guys and Gals...

Been wondering for quite some time and finally figured I would ask the professionals here. you see I've been aware of the starter safety relay function of not allowing the engine to start when the engine is running.....voltage seen from the alternator.... and how when the diode in the alternator goes bad it will also not allow the motor to start either due to thinking the engine is running..

My question is how exactly does this relay work??? Where does it get it's power to actuate the coil inside allowing voltage to flow to the starter motor solenoid? You see if the alternator is performing it's function and charging the system why in the world should we buy a new one just because of a diode.. ????? How can you bypass this relay without installing a toggle or push button switch...

Sure do appreciate any info please.. i have a D65EX-12 that doesn't start until I put power to the solenoid.. I've checked the neutral safety switch for continuity and is working as it should. The only other thing I think is the alternator and that is why I asked about jumping the relay because the alternator is charging..

Link Belt Excavator Swing Problem 4300C

Hello gentlemen. I am hoping to get a few answers on a problem I am having with my excavator. It is a 4300C Link Belt.

It seems that the swing brake will not release. After having the swing motor rebuilt, and having all my hydraulic components cleaned, (tanks, lines, cylinders, new filters installed, new oil and an extensive amount of cleaning) I still have no swing left or right. It wants to swing when I pull the lever to the left the motor bogs way down and starts to swing but stops. When I move the lever to the right it bogs the motor down. I have pilot pressure at 560 pounds. All of my other functions work (bucket, dipper, boom, tracks, forward, reverse).

There is a plate under the swing brake on top of the swing motor with three hoses coming out of it. The two hoses coming out of the front go to a solenoid which works when I put 24 volts to it, which when energized does not let oil flow back to the tank. When not energized oil returns to the tank. When my safety switch is not energized I have no functions. When energized I have all my functions like it should except brake release.

And here's the kicker... this machine has no computer functions. All of the computer inside the cab and switches etc. have been removed and bypassed by previous owner. It has a throttle cable, an ignition key, and one switch for the safety and that's it.

Back to the plate under the swing brake, the hose out the back is not getting pressure. Should it have pilot pressure when one of the controls is moved? At this time my pressure gauge is showing zero during all functions. :Banghead

Also, on the #3 pump there is an electrical solenoid which has full 24 volts all of the time. Is this for pilot pressure or pump pressure? I realize all these controls should function together through the computer, but this machine has been used without it for years running a magnet in a scrap yard. Hopefully some of you have worked on some of these older machines and can shed some light on my problem.

Thank you.

new holland lb75b loader/backhoe problems

Our lb75b was have some loping at idle for a few days then yesterday while operating it got really bad and then stalled was able to refire and move to location to look at it but stalled several more times. We found fuel filter completely clogged due to a filthy tank drained tank replaced filter it would then start (but hard to start) it thenrun s at 2000rpm for several mins then slowly drops off till it stalls (unless accelerator pedal is quickly pushed to floor then released then it starts back at 2000rpm again) other than that no real throttle response also has no power to do any at this high idle. We bypassed fuel tank to another clean tank with fresh fuel bled all lines starting with fuel pump then inlet fuel filter then inlet to injector pump then outlet of injector pump then at each injector also made sure return line was not clogged but still have the same problem. We have worked on many tractors in the past but we are baffeled at this problem. Also there are some wires going to the injector pump some type of solenoids im assuming. Please Help as you all know time is $ and I need this thing running yesterday!!!!

Questions about Tilt buckets

Anyone out there has experience with a tilting ditch bucket? I purchased one of those SEC ones last spring. Bucket works awesome other than I believe the cylinders should maybe be bigger? I know with it being a seven foot bucket there is a lot of leverage on the cylinders but I still think the bucket could be more stable. It seems wishy/washy. Is there anyone with experience with a Cat, WB, Brandt, or any other cylinder design? Also just to save anyone the trouble I'm not interested in a Helac style. Have talked to guys that have had them and they are as bad if not worse than the one I have with cylinders.

Cat 336 El?

I've been looking at getting a 330 sized machine lately but just haven't found the right deal. My local cat dealer has a nice 2012 336 E with a progressive link thumb. I know very little about these machines. Whats everyone's thoughts on these machines... Case 1845C Drive Chain Questions

I'm going through a new to me 1845C. I'm checking, adjusting, lubing, etc. I went to adjust the drive chain for the LH hydraulic motor and there is no more adjustment to be had. The chain is still too floppy. Also the RH hydraulic motor chain is too tight. I'm just like Goldilocks!!. Any way I thought I will replace both chains and adjust accordingly.

Can anyone tell me what size chain and how many links or feet I need to do both sides on the drive motors? TIA

///// How many hours is too many hours ? /////////

Hi All,

I am looking at buying a vibratory plow (smaller one like a Case Maxi Sneaker) and I have a choice between a few machines.

All have their pros and cons condition wise and how they are equipped (example, some have the chain trencher up front some not, some have the boring unit....some not),

I have a chance to get a unit with about 4700 hours on it that the owner claims runs fine....he has not done anything major to it other than change oil and filters and grease (he mainly used the vibratory plow).

Is that too many hours for a diesel engine (believe 4 cyl Leyland diesel (british?).

What do you think?.....How many hours should the unit be good for?

Thanks!

Andrew

PS - most of the other machines I have looked at have about half the hours or less....only reason I am considering this unit instead of the others for basically the same price is because it comes with the front trencher / bore unit, has new tires, and the boring rods and bits (plus he said it was work ready)....the other units...with half the ours or less....do not have the optional attachments etc...

Cat D7E 47A Direct Drive

Hi. This is my first post to the forum and I have got a silly question for you all. Well some might find it silly, hopefully i wont take too much abuse haha.

Right here we go. How do I operate the machine as in the title. I have used a poweshift model before but have to go and check out a direct drive version. Do you have to be stationary to change direction and speed? What is the long lever that sits to your left for coming out of the floor? the steer clutches come out of the dash infront of you if that makes any difference.

Many thanks

Asv rc30 need some pointers

samedi 30 août 2014

Hey guys, I found what looks to be a decent 2001 asv rc30 locally that seems priced right. I currently own a cat 277c so I a, familiar with the asv undercarriage on a MTL.

My question for you guys is what do I need to look for on a 2000 hour machine? What are their strong points and weak points? Considering the tracks and undercarriage are in good shape what should that machine be worth? I would use it for doing light dirt work and snow removal in tight places and would like to enclose the cab and put heat in it if possible? Do any of you know anyone making snow pushers for mini skids?

Thanks in advance! JUNKMAN

943 3204 question

I was digging a basement with the 943 and it started getting hot all at once, got it cooled down some and took the radiator cap off, it has alot of air bubbling up in the radiator. our guess is blown head gasket.

So my question is what is the best way to make sure that's what it is? Can you blow air in a injector and see if it bubbles in the radiator? Any other ideas besides head gasket? Had sevarel of these but never had a issue like this, they have all been good or completely exploded to the point we just put in a reman engine. Thanks.

What's the secret?

I just rebuilt one of the steering cylinders on my Case 580SE backhoe. Everything ended up just fine, and in fact was simpler than I expected, except for one thing. It took me almost an hour to get the main rod seal inside the gland. This seal has an O-ring inside of it, and not only was it nearly impossible to physically get the seal into the groove inside the gland, but the O-ring kept trying to pop out from inside the seal. I finally got it in, but just through shear persistence and the utilization of assortment of wooden dowels, dental tools and some spirits to calm the temptation to smash it to pieces.

The main problem for me is that the shaft or rod is about 3/4" OD, and so I'm trying to cram this thick stiff 2-part seal into the gland and get it oriented into the groove. I followed the Case instruction exactly, which said to just "put it in there".

Surely there is another way, as no sane person would design something this way. Please, someone fill me in on the secret. I swear allegiance to the backhoe club and promise to never divulge it to an outsider or girl.

D6H Hyd Oil Filter blowout question

Today, while running my machine for what ever reason the top of the hyd oil filter gasket started leaking badly & seemed the system had air it it.

When I first started it I raised the blade to the top & rotated the tilt back & forth. I ran it about 5 minutes & then the oil came out the top of the filter. I had not been on the machine in over a month.

Aside from changing the filter & filling it back with oil, is there anything I should be looking for?

This machine just turned 4000 hours & has been used about 100 hours per year for the last few years since I bought it.

Bobcat T190 hydraulic failure

vendredi 29 août 2014

I have a t190 with 2400 hrs. It's a turbo/high flow. It's been well maintained by myself and has really been pretty reliable. I just moved to a new job and after about 1 hour of work the hydraulics started to slow. This includes bucket lift, tilt and clamshell. The drive is fine. We parked it and checked the fluid which showed full. We returned the next day and the fluid showed low, but it took less than a gallon to top it off. We started it up and it worked fine for about an hour and went back to barely functioning, that is, unless the engine is at high rpm's it won't raise the bucket. I brought it home and my bobcat shop manual says bad pump, and shows a parts breakdown of a 2 gear pump. My bobcat dealer say it doesn't have a pump but rather a hydraulic control and didn't offer much else in the way of info. I understand that these things are pretty damn technical, but it seem like some of you guys are pretty savvy. Any leads would be appreciated.

New Holland LS 180 running problem.

My 180 starts fine but after around 15-20 minutes of regular use it will start to idle funny and then finally cut off. After about 5 minutes it will start back up and run for another 5-10 minutes and then do the same thing. I have changed the fuel filter, both air filters and the fuel solenoid on the left side of the engine. Don't know if there are anymore??? Any tips for solving this problem?

Need career advice

Hey everyone,

I need a little advice. I currently work a trucking job hauling water in the oilfield. I'm trying to get in the dirt work business and I've just been given the oppourtunity. A owner of a dirt company wants to hire me as a dump truck/heavy equipment operator. Starting pay is $120 a day, $150 a day after 30 days. It's a job where I'd have to file my own taxes, he said they'll start doing w2s after the first of the year. And any other time I'd jump right on it, but I'm building a house and my bank won't allow me to close on our house just starting out with a 1099 company. So I have two options, leave this opportunity behind or work my @$$ off for 3 months until I'm clear of the bank. My current employer is lenient on what time I come to work. Is having 2 full time jobs doable? I'm very afraid of leaving this opportunity. Just need a little advice.

D6c Steering Clutches (again)

Previous thread from a few days ago about "D6c Steering Clutches Not Completely Releasing" got me wondering about my clutches, which act the same way.

Looked up the specs for my s/n range and started checking pressures.

----------------------------------------

Pump pressure at "G" (trans filter) spec: 315 psi @ low idle, 350 ±10 @ high idle (in neutral)

Checks: 300 @ low idle and 410 @ high idle

----------------------------------------

Pump pressure at "K" (steering chk valve) spec: 315 psi min @ low idle w/clutches released (I assume that means levers pulled out), (No High idle spec)

Checks:

330 psi w/both levers in

225 psi w/both levers pulled

265 psi w/left lever pulled

265 psi w/right lever pulled

---------------------------------------

LH Clutch pressure at "J" (pipe to LH clutch) Spec: 315 psi min @ low idle w/clutches released

Checks:

0 psi w/levers in

220 psi w/both levers pulled

260 psi w/LH lever pulled

---------------------------------------

RH Clutch pressure at "H" (pipe to RH clutch) Spec: 315 psi min @ low idle w/clutches released

Checks:

0 psi w/levers in

200 psi w/both levers pulled

240 psi w/RH lever pulled

---------------------------------------

Hope that isn't too confusing....maybe someone can tell me what could be causing the pressure variations.

The pressure at the filter seems odd...too low at low idle & too high at high idle. Has someone boosted the pressure to compensate for a worn pump?

Note: The seals at the steering clutch pistons have been replaced to try and help clutch dragging (mostly when cold), but it didn't improve it.

I haven't checked any of the other trans pressures listed on the spec page yet....mostly concerned about clutch operation for now.

Next time I'm up at Ziegler's I may see if there's someone in shop that's old enough to have some experience with a D6c.

75-04 no comm.from drive controller

39-16 left joystick not connected

40-16 right joystick not connected

I have wiring schmatics and was doing pin-outs for powers and grounds and noticed voltage was a little high 15.1v

I unplugged alt. so now volts is about 12.2v but still "no hyd.and drive" and same codes

I changed the ACS controller a couple months ago for a "no drive" issue and put it back now to test but still

"no hyd.and drive" and same codes I now put back the new ACS controller.

It seems if it sits over night it will work for awhile.

How To Operate an Excavator

Good Morning Gentlemen. I have decided to purchase an excavator for trenching and clearing purposes on the farm as well as some manure piling/picking at a nearby feedlot to help with the payments. I am skilled with farm equipment but have never ran an excavator. I am wondering if there is somewhere on this site for education? I have trolled about and found lots of tips and tricks but would like a more detailed explanation of various excavator movements. Ie. people suggest jump turning but why and how to you go about this? I have searched the site and google but frankly this site has too many skilled people on it! and everything you guys discuss is over my head. =) Could anyone point me anywhere? As a bonus the first job is a bunch of trenching on the bald ass prairie so it will be safe learning. Couple other questions:

-what % of the hourly rate should be earmarked for maintenance? what % for fuel costs?

-what would daily/weekly service look like

-does anyone know where there is a good link for how to put a track back on?

For lots of excavator type movements I have watched you tube but am concerned that the people in the videos might not be working in the most efficient/safe/or machine friendly manner. Do any of you have videos or a youtube channel I could watch for more learning?

Really appreciate this forum and the guys on here. Look forward to this experience.

Bandit 3590 chipper/C-18 Cat #3 piston window in block

First off I'm not an engine builder. I work on equipment but have never rebuilt a motor. That being said this is the info I got from my shop foreman, Caterpillar, and the owner of the company. The owner was actually running the machine when this happened. I wish I had pictures to share, but anyway this is how it went. Boss man is chipping, engine is running fine, he said stumbled, blew a cloud of black smoke out of the exhaust and then the block "EXPLODED"! This thing blew a hold out both sides of #3 cylinder. The machine is still under warranty so they called Bandit and they said take it to Cat. We've dealt with Cat on warranty issues before and this is the FIRST time there were no questions asked, no discussion. As soon as the foreman showed up at their shop he was met with a service bulletin and told you'll have it back in two weeks, new motor, not a dime out of pocket....well, except for the down time. That just about cost what the engine would have.

Anyway, the bulletin is where my question lies. They claim that over time the intercooler due to condensation collects water in the system. During operation this water that collects freezes. When enough water collects, and this block of ice gets big enough, they say it can eventually dislodge, go through the system and when it enters a cylinder/cylinders this is the result. I'm hoping someone can educate me here, but this seems ridiculous to me. Would the operating temperature of the machine itself not be enough to keep ice from forming in the intercooler?

Skid steer not counter rotating/turning/hydraulic issues

jeudi 28 août 2014

I own a 2004 +/- Komatsu Sk820. The machine runs good and has lots of power to go forward and reverse, loader arms, and buckets movement. However when I try to turn the machine at idle to about half power it seems like the "parking brake" is on. It wants to turn but doesnt. At full power the machine turns but hesitantly. Ive also noticed that when it does turn it does not counter rotate, meaning that when turning right the left tracks dont move. There is a electronic parking brake on the machine however it seems to function as the machine moves forward and reverse, but I dont know if there are other hydraulic solenoids on the machine that are blocking turning or if there is one in the pump itself. I've changed the hydraulic oil/filter and lifted the machine to check for play on the hubs. I have heard that there can be airpockets within the hyraulic system but am not sure of how to purge the system of air. Hopefully its not the drive motors, but I doubt both of them went bad simultaneously but stranger things have happend. Any advice would be great before I start tearing into it more.

I have a Cat 247B Serial #CAT0247BKMTL02658. I was running it yesterday and it suddenly quit with no warning and now it wont start. I checked the fuses and found what I believe to be the fuel cut off fuse to be blown. I replaced it and tried cranking and it blew again. I pawed over the wire harness to the fuel system and couldnt find any rubbed wires etc. so I replaced the fuse again and while it still wont start, the fuse stays intact. I checked the filter and there is fuel there, so I cracked the injectors and cranked for 15 seconds with the throttle wide open.

Im Lost at this point, does anyone have any input?

Thanks in advance!

Need Help! 1996 John Deere 8875 boom and bucket shuttering when hot

hi guys I need opinions... I have a John Deere 8875the model is from 1996 the motor runs strong and the machine is still tight has way too many hours for the meter to read and a horrible repaint on it. the machine runs my badco excavator attachment without a problem on auxiliary controls. everything worked wonderfully until 3 days ago. The machine runs strong for about 10 minutes until it warms up then I lose proper controls of the boom and buckwt..they start to hestitate at first then shutter an inch at a time under load.they won't left off won't back down won't do anything properly then when I take the weight off them they move slowly back to the regular seated position. When the unit cools it works well again. It is not overheating and all filters and fluid s were changed. I called the Deere shop and a service rep said by the symptoms it maybe a solenoid (part mg86507510) or solenoid support ( part mg 86507506) but he said no promises. He spoke on the phone that I had to lift the cab to change these out and gave me instructions over the phone how to do it which didn't make sense to my setup so I started to question his judgement. Does anyone have input with more certainty?

It would be greatly appreciated. I would hate to buy these parts and install them to find out it doesn't help.

Thanks for any input you guys have.

Cat 420d won't start. Electrical issue?

I have a 2006 420d with 3000 hrs. It won't start. There seems to be no power sent to the starter as if it's a safety cutoff. It is intermittent. Sometimes it starts. Sometimes you play with the shifter and it starts after a couple try's. One time last month it didn't start after several tries. Called cat service and the came out and said it might be the tach. Ordered a new tach and no improvement. Still intermittent starting. I have 12v to the tach harness plug and I have 12v to the orange switch leg and 10.2v to the red leg. I don't know if that's normal. Fuses are all good. The service guy from cat said he looked at the shifter and didn't think it was the problem. I'm thinking I should be looking at that. Any help would be appreciated.

Skidder not Free Spooling

We have an old skidder (can't even find the brand that it is on it). There are some numbers but not a name. Changed the oil and now the free spool does not seem to be working. Is there a certain kind / weight of oil that the free spool needs that I am not aware of?

John Deere 644B -Oil in cooling system

Having some trouble with my old Deere 644B.

Getting oil in the cooling system.

Looks like its oil from the engine . Have replaced the engine oil cooler but nothing changed so it looks like another issue.

I always thought that a broken head gasket would make water get into the engine oil and not the other way around. THere is no signs of water in the oil here.

THis makes me a bit unsure if the head gasket is the issue but what else could it be?

Anyone with som knowledge about this?

743 Hydro leak

Hey guys, I have an old Bobcat 743 that has developed a hydraulic leak located between the motor and pump. When the cab is up, I can't see back far enough to see exactly where it's coming from. And looking from the engine compartment, I can't see far enough forward to see it either. After thoroughly pressure washing the unit, it appears that 1 of the 2 hard lines that run across the machine may have sprung a leak. My question to you guys is, are those lines solid all the way across the machine? Or is there a connection behind the motor I can't see? Also, to get to the leak, would pulling the motor be my next step? How difficult is that? Thanks guys!

Central tyre inflation systems on log trucks.

I am curious to know how popular these systems are in north america/europe and who has experience with cti systems.

I have heard that the cti system offers incredible traction, increased tyre and drivetrain life, fuel economy and improved ride.

The cons seem to be that external hoses/fittings are prone to damage and rotators have a limited lifespan.

NH LS180 neutralizer/adjusting neutral

Hello All,

I am trying to adjust our skidsteer so it doesn't "creep". The left side is good, the right side... not so much. After attempting to adjust the linkage to put the pump in neutral after releasing the directional handles, when stroked forward and released - the wheels stop. When stroked in reverse and released - the wheels slow but still roll in reverse.

*Before getting to this point, when stroked forward and released - the wheels would slow but still moved forward. When stroked in reverse and released - the wheels slow but still move in reverse (like the linkage is under-travelling).

I have been working on this on and off for many hours now and I'm ready to pull my hair out!

- All slop is removed from the dampeners

- Spring under neutralizer assembly is good and not sloppy

- Neutralizer pins (underneath) are not bent and the slides move freely over them

- Both handles have the same resistance and both dampeners feel similar in resistance

Has anyone got any tips/tricks to getting this done?

-Brian

Trans. Oil in bellhousing

I have a Hough 65C front end loader with a DT407 engine. Yesterday when i tried to start it the starter did nothing.

I pulled the rear cover off of the starter and oil ran out of it. One of the brushes was broken and the rest of them were a mess.

I removed the starter and can see where there is oil in the bell housing. Is this supposed to be normal or do I have a bad seal somewhere?

Buying a new starter but what about the oil?

Thanks for the help.

International 125e transmission

Hello everybody, and thanks for

reading my post!

I bought a 125e crawler loader last year for a decent price of 8k and it looks great , worked perfect, but the previous owner said that sometimes it slows in drive gear so when that happens to clean the filter (metal screen type) thats right below the operator seat. This happenned twice, which lead me to replace all the hydraulic hoses as soon as i realized the filter was filling with old hose material. No easy task! Then when i was cutting in a road on my farm it slowly petered down slower and slower with no noise at all to a stop....Puzzled i let it sit, came back an hour later and just made it to the house and thats where it sits.,,,, One of the mechanics i talked to that used to work on these in the 70's said it has a dry clutch and the pawls on the spline shafts tend to seize up, can anybody help me out ? Tried just about everything here and man i could use a tip !!

Antifreeze for Bobcat S300 - Propylene or Ethylene Glycol?

I checked the anti-freeze freeze protection on the Bobcat and the tester only registers 10 degrees Fahrenheit - not nearly good enough for our area. Then I noticed the sticker on the machine that says it contains Propylene Glycol anti-freeze. The usual anti-freeze tester won't work on that, so the protection may or may not be adequate.

One option is to buy a Refractometer tester to test the Propylene Glycol.

Another option might be to drain the system and replace the coolant with Ethylene Glycol antifreeze. If doing this, how does one get all the old coolant out of the system? Are there any drain plugs low down on the Kubota engine block? And where is the drain plug on the rad?

What have others done - changed to Ethylene Glycol or remained with the Propylene Glycol?

Thanks for any help.

JLG 600s footswitch wiring problem

Hi all, I bought a used JLG 600s (1999) and the footswitch wiring in the platform has been yanked out. I've researched the wiring diagrams to try to determine where exactly the four footswitch wires are connected to but it is truly unclear. There are only 4 wires; orange, red, blue, and black. I know the orange is power supply from breaker and black is ground... But I cannot determine where the other 2 were connected or if there is another component missing. A picture of the actual wiring would be great.

Anybody familiar with this? Thanks in advance for any input.

case 580 b back hoe

I have a friend who owns a case 580ck b. The machine is in pretty fair condition I think. It does have some problems but for it's age It's not bad.

It has the diesel and it runs and starts great. The loader and hoe hydraulics are strong enough to lift the entire machine. It could use 3 pins and bushings on the hoe but that's it. There are two rams that leak.

About 6 weeks ago he lost reverse and asked me to take a look at it.

I have never worked on a 580 b before. First things first we aren't doing anything to this machine until I can study the service manual. We got one and it has a power shuttle with rockwell clutches. The shuttle oil was full of steel particles. So we changed the oil and filter. This seemed to help, but the pressure on the reverse side is still low and the machine still didn't want to back up.

I never liked the way the shuttle shifter felt. I guess I was expecting it to be a little more distinct F N R. We disconnected the shifting linkage and manually moved the control valve with the machines trans in neutral. To me it still wasn't right so we took the control valve off.

When I disassembled the control valve I was hoping to find it plugged but it wasn't. What I did find still baffles me. The control spool has no neutral detent machined into it. Which explains why I could never find neutral.

I am a tool and die maker by trade and over the years I have learned when the part in your hand doesn't match the drawing in front of you it is almost always big trouble. Every picture in the service manual of this control spool clearly shows a neutral detent. It even goes to great lengths to describe neutral in the hydraulic schematics for the shuttle. Time to go see the case dealer.

Excellent people. They sat down with us and discussed the machine with us at length. The service manager seems to think this is from an early B. I have a problem with that.

Case went through great lengths to describe the manual shuttle, the power shuttle with twinn disc and rockwell clutches, and the hydrostatic drive. Why would they completely omit an early version of the power shuttle?

In every drawing of this control valve spool there are three detents. There is no mention of a shuttle without neutral. It is the only part of the control valve that differs from all the drawing in the manual.

So how did it get there?

Well according to the case dealer we can't buy a new valve which leaves salvage. Some one could have manufactured it.

Which is something I can do but, I would have to program the CMM to measure the valve body first then reverse engineer the spool in order to make this a one time experience. We're talking a whole lot of time here.

Does anybody know of a two position control valve on a 580b?

Does any body have any other Ideas or suggestions?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

4orville

Read a thread on here about replacing a c-12 oil pan gasket.

It stated the through bolts sometime leak and make you think you have a bad gasket;

if that's the case wouldn't you replace the gasket and bolts anyway; or is this normal.

As you may guess; I'm having this problem; I am about to replace but I'm thinking what;

maybe I should just torque and let it seep?

Holes in cutting edges....

mardi 26 août 2014

How do you guys go about putting holes in cutting edges? Always wondered how other people do this, never did ask. I have had no luck drilling , annular cutters don't even scratch them. So out comes the torch, which is a pain. Never had much problem blowing holes through thick mild steel but I think it's where the cutting edges work harden is why it's so tough to torch or drill. Have not tried either on new edges as they usually have holes punched in them already. Just wondered if there was a better way than torching, or not. Thanks!

CAT70 Scraper: How to pull front axle stub?

Found a loose bearing on the front axle of our CAT70. Went to tighten the nut and found that someone has been into this before. The nut is very loose on the shaft threads. Decided to pull the stub and see what we can do...

Removed the 1" bolt and 5/8" bolt from the axle tube. Cleaned up all the grime from around the stub shaft and from the slit in the bottom of the axle tube. Knocked a couple of punches into the slit at the bottom of the tube to try to spread it open a bit. Put a couple more chisels between the axle stub shoulder and the axle tube.

Have been tapping on the axle tube and going at the axle stub shoulder with the air hammer to no avail.

Then cut a piece of tube to fit over the axle stub, a bit bigger than the shoulder, to bear against the end of the axle tube. Made a plate for the end and carefully threaded the axle nut back on. We have the nut fairly snug but don't want to over do it because the threads aren't the greatest (the whole reason for this operation!)

Any other ideas?

Andrew

Repair steel hydraulic line

The other day I asked for suggestions about repairing a badly bent line and the responses were informative and mixed.

Since then, I've found another Eaton/Weatherhead product that is a hose end/ ¾ ferrule.

So I have lots of choices:

Weld on a fitting.

Braze on a fitting

Silver solder that fitting.

Use the ferrule fitting.

What is the difference between braze and silver solder from strength and vibration perspective ?

A Master plumber said vibration was a bad idea with ferrule type fittings. What do you think ?

I'm avoiding welding because I'm not very good at it and there is only a generator where the machine is.

Thanks for sharing your experiences and opinions.

Anyone use "reclaimed concrete"??

Hi all,

I'm helping a local non-profit group create more parking area behind their facility. They have a very tight budget. I have devised a plan that will yeild about 18 new parking spaces in an area that has an approximate slope of 6%. With a tight budget, asphalt or concrete surfacing is out of the question -- aggregate of some type it will be.

Have any of you ever used "reclaimed concrete", which is how our local concrete company describes the processed / unused portion of concrete that comes back to the plant. Looking at the material, it looks like mostly sand with some aggregate in it. I suppose they somehow wash the cement out of the mix and dump it, and then sell it at a seemingly good price of 6.50 per yard. Any body have any experience with something like this? How well does it set up / compact, likelihood of it washing, etc.?

Thanks in advance for your insight.

Trenching in Deere 200

Hey guys,

I've been asked to run a JD 200 for a friend who needs to trench a 6' deep water line for about 200'. I've run smaller machines several times and completed several projects involving trenching, grading, demo, etc.

I'm not anticipating that running a bigger machine will be much different, but wanted to check! Anything to watch out for/careful with on a full size machine? I'm definitely far more comfortable with ISO controls, and I would assume a newer rented JD should be switchable in the cab?

I am going to slope the trench per OSHA (and won't be persuaded otherwise on the job!). What is the easiest way to cut a slope as you trench from the end? I was assuming you start out full width then step in, then dig the center down to grade, and just knock down your benches into slopes?

I was planning to put a survey paint mark on the stick at 6' with the bucket flat as a grade marker. Any easier way, other than constantly checking it? Its a pressurized water line, so I think the only gradeability concerns are keeping it at the right depth below the ground (We're up in New England).

Thanks for any pointers!

Deere 490 Pattern Change

Looking at buying a mid 80's John Deere 490 Excavator. Have not been able to find much information on these machines (lots on 490d and 490e).

The machine is well used and will only serve as a hobby machine to use around my camp.

The hoe is set up on backhoe pattern and id need to switch it to excavator, looked behind the cab at valve bank and all i could see were hard lines that would not be easy to change out to switch boom and stick functions. The seller mentioned something about switching linkages under joysticks but im not real interested in that. I assume a machine this old wouldnt have a patter changer.

If anyone has any details on an easy way to switch the patterns....

Also interested in what i should look for when looking at this machine, other then obvious undercarrage wear, final drives, pins and bushings etc..

Case / Cummins over fueling

I started to title this thread "Gee, I wonder how bad I screwed myself?", but I figured something more descriptive was better.

I build artificial reefs in the ocean. I do this with another contractor who owns the tug and barge, I own the trucks and equipment.

I had left my 580 SK at the dock and he used it in the yard a little. When I got back, I saw that the exhaust pipe had rusted at the bottom and leaned over where it could hit the loader arm and gotten knocked off. He said he had already ordered a new one. I asked if he had kept it covered. He said he had except for once it had been in a light sprinkle for 3-5 minutes until he could get it covered. He had run it a few times since then, so I didn't worry about it. I cranked it up and let it run at about 11-1200 rpm for 15-20 minutes just to let it warm up and make sure the batteries were charged (no load at all). It ran smoothly with no smoke. I put a tight fitting plastic bottle on the exhaust pipe and we went to sea.

Later that evening at the reef site, I cranked it up and began unloading the barge. It skipped when I first started it. After 3 or 4 minutes, I noticed I was getting a lot of exhaust fumes, and realized I had left the bottle on the muffler below the hood line. Once I took that off, I saw it was putting out a lot of grey fuel smelling smoke. At this point, if we had been on the hill, I would have shut it down and fixed it, but, my friend had $8-9,000 invested in getting me out there. It usually only takes me 40 minutes to offload a barge full.

The machine had very low power which got lower as I ran it, and the smoke got darker. Every time I had to wait for the tug to circle back to the buoy, I shut it off. It always cranked right back up very well. I ran it for 3 or 4 fifteen minute sessions with about 5 minutes rest in between. By the end, it was so weak it could hardly lift the boom with no load, wouldn't turn but about 1000rpm-no load, and the smoke was black as coal. I really hope I didn't wash a cylinder or burn a piston.

This is a 580 sK phase 3 with a naturally aspirated, mechanically controlled, Case 4-390. (Cummins B3.9)

In the morning I will check the air intake system, loosen the injector lines one at a time to see if one makes less difference, pull and inspect the injectors, and do a compression test.

Does anyone have any ideas I may have missed?

D3C II front idler bearing failure

lundi 25 août 2014

My little lawn tractor started squeaking about a week ago. I figured it was a track idler failing on me. Not a big deal to fix, so I didn't pay much attention to it. However today it started squeaking a bit more. No where near continuous, but enough for me to notice with ear plugs in. I felt the different idlers, and nothing was remotely warm, except the large front idler. So, after looking around, it doesn't appear to be a major fix. Break the tracks, remove guards, remove the the four bolts that hold the idler to the little wish bone looking thingy, that goes to the track tensioner. (Yeah, those are technical terms.:D ) Am I missing anything? Once its out, is it a serviceable bearing, or am I just looking at replacing the entire idler/bearing assembly?

Serial number 5CJ01041. Any help would be appreciated. CJ

Bobcat E80 bucket sizing

Ill try to keep this short.

I have a 2013 Bobcat E80 - 900 hrs. Works well, but in hard clay it has a tough time making production with a 30" smoothedge.

Recommendation was swap out the smoothedge for a 24" spade teeth bucket and try it.

So I rented the 24" to try, and they send me this little bucket that is 6" narrower, and at least a foot smaller in height.

I called the dealer asking how I'm supposed to make production with this little teaspoon bucket. They said that its the right one for the machine.

In my mind I was expecting a bucket of similar height to the 30" I have, but just a little narrower.

Thoughts? I need to get more hard clay moved with this machine. I am digging around utilities and drain tile...which is why I like the smoothy.

Bore sizes for line boring

Hi guys i wanted to make this thread to get some info on bore sizes for different machinery, as we all know it, its not easy getting sizes from manufacturers, and the bushes and pins are not always on the job to go off, if anyone has a website that can access this info for any machinery, cat, komatsu, jcb, hitachi, case, liebherr, bucyrus and on and on, trucks, dozers, scrapers, graders, diggers, anything that has hole with some sizes and tolerances would be helpful thanks.

Case 70xt drive/steering issues

HI, New to the site and hoping for a little help.

I purchased a Case 70XT for what appeared to be a fair price at the time, unfortunetly after turning a few wrenches to straighten some minor things up, im still having issues.

When you first start it up, it appears to drive and turn okay (a little sluggish compared to an 85 or 95 machine, but i realize thay are larger and more powerful) However, once you run it for 15 or 20 minutes, it begins to loose all drive and steer power and can hardly turn out of its own way. This issue appears to be the same for both the left and right drive, forwards or reverse and eventually gets to where it wont hardly move at all. Another thing i have noticed is that the loader arms drift down very quick, im not usre if this could be related to the drive issues or not?? (I believe they are different systems?)

Trying to think of all possible issues, im not too sure of the hydraulic configuration or how things exactly work, but knowing that it has left and right drive motors im a little skeptical if these could both be bad? This leads me to believe its possibly a pump issue? but im also thinking these have too pumps, left and right so thats got me puzzled as well.

doing some research on this issue, i have found that the first most common thing to do is check pump pressure. is there any chance someone can offer a little guidance on that? what to block off if needed and where to tap a guage in?

I have also read about control and/or relief valve issues? could this be a common problem that i may have?

the filters were changed with new oil but still having issues? any help would be apprecited. thanks for your time and input.

864 bobcat error code 12-23

Not sure if these details pertain to my error code however i'll give all info and you can determine. While working my skidsteer i had it on a sharp decline, fuel was low enough that it ran out of fuel. topped it up and fortunately it started with little difficulty. After 10mins of problem free usage i shut it down and went in for supper, upon returning i turned the key on and the #17 general warning light came on. it started fine and worked good for about 15seconds then it lossed power and seemed as if it were starving for fuel. I shut it off started it again but it slowly died out and wouldnt restart. I held the light button in until it displayed the 12-23 error code. After researching the manual it says the problem is 12-Front auxillary PWM Switch(Proportional Control) 23-not calibrated. The manual does not direct me to this area, any suggestions on what and where to go from here.

Anyone work with other excavators?

Hey guys,

I'm trying to stick it out as a one man band, but get thrown some things by some good customers that are simply too much for me to handle as a owner operator. Have any of you worked with another company to get a job done, and what kind of ups and downs did you have?

D8H Steering Clutch Problem

We have a late model D8H3381x. We parked it last year and everything was fine. This year we started it up to attach clearing rake and the left steering clutch is stuck disengaged, i.e the handle is back so clutch is disengaged. We have tapped on it softly but it will not engage. Lineage seems fine.

We rebuilt all of the powertrain including transmission, brakes, steering clutches, bearings, pinions, bullgears, less than a 100 hours ago and everything was fine when tractor was parked.

Would anyone have any ideas as to the issue before we pull rops and fuel tank?

TIA

963C losing track speed

Ok this machine has me stumped, I got called out to look at it because the operator said that it was losing travel speed the farther he tracked with it but if he went back to park and then pulled the lever back into go it would go back to normal for a distance and speed would start decreasing again. He is correct it is doing exactly that in forward and reverse. I plugged in ET and noticed that the right track speed sensor was not working, so I replaced that and have a spot on speed reading from right track to left track. Re calibrated all peddles and travel lever and the issue is still present. Every input to the computer is correct and steady. All pilot and track pressures are spot on where they need to be. The reason that the machine is decreasing in speed is because the computer is decreasing current to the travel solenoids as you travel again in forward and reverse identically. What I can't figure out is why the computer is doing this?!? Hopefully someone here can help me with this problem!

Thanks Tommy!

Is it easy to learn a trade without ANY experience?

I want to become a CAT dealer technician or a heavy equipment technician, but I really am not mechanically inclined and I'm a novice when it comes to this stuff. Is it possible to get trained to do these jobs and be trained on the job, or is it just for those who already know their way around an engine?

Thanks!

John Deere 310 Tranny issues

I have a John Deere 310 Backhoe (1971-75). The tranny has always shifted slow from forward to reverse and back ( 4 to 6 seconds) but once engaged would work fine. Recently, it has started slipping as it warms up, to the point where the tractor will not move. Shut it off and let it cool down, and it will move again until it warms up again. The rest of the hydraulic system works as the steering. any suggestions to my problems? Thanks, Boomer192

Bobcat S175 dead.....need help

Hello I have a 2004 Bobcat S175. I have no power to anything and I started running lines down with no luck.

So far I have checked the battery and connections and they are good. Ran both red leads down (to starter and to relay with the 2 nuts) and getting power to both.

I checked the fuse panel and all the small fuses seem mine, I did have a loose relay fuse/switch. I pushed it in and the power came on for a split second and then nothing. I moved the relays around to see if it was bad and nothing.

I checked where the right panel, where the key is and I get power to one of the eight points on the plug that comes in but nothing no where else and nothing out of the 3 ports on the key plug.

I don't know of any other fuses or relays to try.

Can anyone tell me why I would have nothing, you turn the key and nothing come on no beeps, no lights nothing.

I am in a bad spot cause it is out on my property where I cant load it to take it to a mech or get a flat bed wrecker to it.

any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Mike

can we safely substitute AW/32 10 weight for T0-4 10 weight when hose busts cat320c

Hello,

I have had a few hose busts lately on my CAT 320c.

I am having trouble finding access to TO-4 10 weight hydraulic fluid at times. It is Sunday and I need my machine to be prepping a set of football field concrete bleachers in the early AM. I blew a hose and just replaced it and I cannot get T0-4 10 weight fluid until tuesday afternoon.

But, I can get AW/32 10 weight which was a TO-2 spec in older excavators.

I have been very strict to run the T0-4 fluid.

IS it harmful to supplement with an occasional AW/32?

I am very particular about this machine and it's longetivity.

Adding Electric over Hyd. Solenoid?

Hello Folks,

I was wondering if, I could add an electric over hyd solenoid on a skidsteer, more specifically, a Caterpillar 289c. This model does not have High Flow XPS, so it does not have any of those other couplers, or the 14pin electric control coupler.

First off, is it even possible to add a solenoid control on the machine?

Is so, how hard would it be? And the ballpark cost.

Thanks,

ReligiouslyCAT

Komatsu PC128 UU-1

Hi I have been shifting a lot of dirt with my machine filling in a waterhole and doing a lot of swinging with a loaded bucket. I have noticed that there is a bit of a noise coming from below as I swing her around. The only grease points that I can find are two grease nipples, one at the front of the swing circle and one 180 degrees behind it. There is plenty of oil in the swing motor. I was wondering if there is some other grease/ lube points that I have missed.

The noise is hard to describe but just a bit of a rumble that suggests to me that it could benefit from a bit of lubrication. Would anyone have any suggestions to help me out.

Many thanks,

Ken

Cat 257B blow by! Please help

samedi 23 août 2014

I have a 2007 Cat 257 B with 652 hours. Here's what's going, I've noticed that running it a few hours here and there I'll check the oil and started noticing it lower on the dip stick every time. I don't run the machine very often. It doesn't have water in the oil or oil in the water so I didn't think it was the head gasket problem. It's not knocking & sounds like it's running fine but while it's idling I take the valve cap off and it's puffing white smoke out bad. A few mechanics thought the rings were stuck so they told me to change the oil, flush the engine with diesel & put in new oil with marvel mystery oil. So that's what I did! However I ran it for 15-20 mins not very hard today and the low oil pressure light came on! We did not have a pressure gauge but we did take the quick connect off and turned the engine over and it is getting plenty of oil to the top of the heads. I plan on buying a new oil pressure sensor Monday but does anybody have any suggestions or comments? Anything would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

D3C III Lift Cylinder Pin

I have a leaking lift cylinder on my D3C III Hystat. The pins holding the cylinder to the frame are a puzzle. Can anyone tell me how to get them out? And for that matter, how to get them back in? The rear pin appears to be pressed into the cylinder end, and it has a threaded hole in the middle. The front pin may come off by removing two bolts that appear to hold a cam shaped spacer that the pin slides through.

Need advice beofre I buy this 350B

Ive been looking for a small dozer that I could haul behind my pickup and use on the farm for awhile. Stumbled upon this 350B links below with ad and video walkaround(watch in the video of the blowby when I pull the dipstick).

To me the undercarriage looks great no slop at all, and the sprocket looked great. The only thing that worried me was the engine blowby, I have the same 188 in my 580B and it doesn't have that much but is still strong. The dozer did seem to have good power, but when you went to start it, you had to crank longer than usual(I did see that there is a leaking injector that I can fix). The Axle tubes going to the sprockets seem to have a gear oil leak where it meets the rearend. hour meter said 5,900 hours. Some of the pins in the blade did have some play, along with where the blade connects to the frame. I have little knowledge on what I could be getting into, and I would like to know if there is anything regarding the transmission I should look at. To me this seems like a good machine. Thanks!
